Manual gearbox trouble
20. Jan 2011 at 16:39

Hi guy's, it's been a while but now i have a new problem with my Miggy.
This morning i tried to reverse into a parking bay and as i squeezed the gas pedal and lifted the clutch the car started to creep forward (i think it found 4th instead). I shuffled the gearlever a few times and it did eventually reverse but has since played up like this all day. When i select 1st and 3rd the lever feels like it is in neutral (moves left to right) and when 5th is used it actually selects 3rd causing the car to rev up when the clutch is lifted obviously.
Could i be right if i thought it was a broken selector fork????
The Miggy is a W reg (2000) 2.0GLS straight 4 with a 5 speed manual box.

I thank anyone in advance for their help.

Why oh why was there never a V8 Omega????
Such a missed oppurtunity.
Look forward to the Cadillac ATS & ATS-V. Maybe a re-badged one will replace the Miggy as a RWD runner?

sounds like a linkage problem but not sure if the miggies have them! i would take off the gear lever and take a look atleast it sounds like it's outside the box and nothing internal

the funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it

Although you are only my first response, your prognosis is more promising than my own first thoughts and this COULD mean that a repair is not as costly as first appears. I hope it is that simple as i would hate to see another Miggy wasted (scrapped) as they are one of the worlds most awsome cars and i truly love my one. Only my wife and kids come higher on my list. Thanks.

Don't have a manual box .. buta quick read of "the Book of Lies" shows a "procedure" for adjusting the gearbox linkage ...

"Note: Vauxhall service tool KM-631A will be required to carry out this procedure.
1 Adjustment of the gearchange linkage is not a routine operation and should only be needed if the mechanism has been removed. If the gearchange action is stiff or imprecise, check that it is correctly adjusted as follows. 2 Position the gearchange lever in the neutral position, firmly apply the handbrake then jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on axle stands. 3 Remove the retaining clips securing the protective cover to the vehicle underbody then fold the cover forwards to gain access to the clamp bolt on the rear end of the gearchange linkage rod. Slacken the clamp bolt so that the end fitting is free to move easily in the rod (see illustrations). 4 From inside the vehicle, unclip the gearchange lever gaiter from the centre console and fold it back over the lever. Free the rubber gaiter from the mounting plate and fold it back to gain access to the base of the gearchange lever. 5 Lock the gearchange lever in position by fitting the service tool (KM-631A) into the gearchange lever housing whilst holding the lever over to the right.
3.3a
Release the retaining clips (arrowed) . . .
3.3b
. . . and peel back the protective cover .

6 From underneath the vehicle, using an open-ended spanner on the flats provided, turn the gearchange linkage rod fully clockwise (as viewed from the rear of the vehicle). Hold the rod in this position then tighten the rod clamp bolt first to the specified stage 1 torque and then through the specified stage 2 angle. 7 Remove the service tool and check the operation of the gearchange lever before seating the rubber gaiter onto its mounting and clipping the gaiter back into the centre console. 8 Ensure the protective cover is correctly seated on the base of the gearchange lever, securing it in position with the retaining clips, then lower the vehicle to the ground"

There is a further procedure for removal/refitting the linkage ..

there is a plastic "cup" under the gearlever if this breaks can give you this type of symptom, also there is a pin hold the lingage on to the lever whcih has been know to come half out if it loses one of its clips, does the gearlever lift up and down?

I had a similar problem myself, like said under the leather cover you will see white plastic knuckles, mine had broken. I had a spare gear lever with the linkage/knuckle which is very easy to change.  Thumbs Up!

No up down movement of lever that i have noticed and i tried pretty firmly. But most of the responses both here and on Yahoo Answers seem to think it is the linkage.

these Getrag boxes are pretty robust - I'm sure it'll be linkage-related.
