Oil Filter
18. Apr 2009 at 19:14

Spent a few more hours today stripping down to change the oil cooler (Its turning into a big job).

Everything was going swimmingly until I went to remove the oil filter.  I think it must have a genuine Vx one on.  I've never seen one of these before.

I unscrewed the end and took out the filter part, but the filter housing would not come off.  I could see a allen key slot inside the housing - is this some kind of locking nut? What size?

If anyone could tell me how to get the damn thing off I would be grateful, or at least advise me on what size allen key to buy.

Is there anything worse than starting a job and not having the tools to do something!!!

Cheers Wink

If I've understood you properly &  you've removed the filter, then you've done it  Undecided
What tends to happen is that the ally housing gets torqued up to silly lbs/ft and the base starts to turn aswell when you try to undo it. it should only be 15(?)Nm which is little more than being nipped up. Thumbs Up!

Whats happened is...I took the filter off the end and the housing is still on solid.  I bent my chain filter remover whilst trying to get it off!!!

Inside the housing I see a slot for an allen key - where it screws on to the block.

Yep, in the centre of the housing is a bolt.

and there are 2 types!

one of them is  27mm hex head, the other takes an allen key type insert...but I cant remember what size sadly (It might have been a multispline actualy!)

This does look like the same filter but no way is the allen key slot 27mm.

I put the biggest allen key I have (10mm)  in the slot and it is only just undersize.  At a guess I would say more like 12 or 13 mm, but not sure.

Thanks mate Thumbs Up!

Cheers mate.  So is it just a matter of loosening the allen key bolt then, or does the housing need screwing off in the same way as an aftermarket filter as well?

Cheers Rob
