towbar wiring... again...
16. Sep 2009 at 18:03

I've just been given a towbar for my estate, it has twin electrics, but no plugs on the vehicle end, anybody know where i can get plugs to fit the omega and in fact does the omega harness support twin towbar sockets?

How does a bar 'with twin electrics' not have the sockets? The sockets & associated wiring ARE the twin electrics. You'll find a socket somewhere at the back of the car (never looked at an estate so don't know) where you'll find the connections for the black 12n socket. The grey 12S needs a permanent live for fridge - via a relay - and a 12 volt supply for the caravan (depending on age of the 'van it's either a permanent supply to temp supply your 'van with 12 volts or for the leisure battery charging)
The plugs & sockets can be bought at various places eg http://www.leisureshopdirect.com/caravan/electric/towing_plugs_and_sockets.aspx but there are loads!

I don't think you'll find those unless someone was rich enough to order a factory fit towbar, and even then you'll only get the 12N. Just use the socket wiring to get your connections from, but be aware that the brakes (black/yellow) at the socket won't suppply the brake light direct. It's wired from a trailer brake check control 'relay' which fits behind the glove box on face lift cars & above the driver's feet on PRE face lift cars, the 'relay' is/was about £16 If you seach hard enough on the forum, you'll find the part number - i posted it - but god knows where.  Roll Eyes  Thumbs Up!   Thumbs Up!

IIRC the plugs for the tow bar sockets are on the left side in the spare wheel well.

there is i was looking at it a while ago, but I seem to remember that the Miggy estate had a dedicated connector behind/underneath the tailgate slam panel trim (if that's the correct term for it) and wanted to know where i could get the towbar side of that connector from.

sorry if i'm not making myself clear enough  Embarrassed

Hmmm seems it might be easier to just wire it in normally, as per the how-to, just thought it might be easier to just plug it in to the existing socket as it were.

Neither Grin just open the lid and they are tucked up the left hand rear corner.

The wiring loom in the back of Loo-Knees' car is made up from various plugs that had the blue/black rear fog bridging wire in them. I already had an OE GM loom with an 8 terminal socket that allowed for switching off the car's rear fogs when you had a caravan plugged in so you don't get blinded from the reflection off the front of the 'van. You get blank looks when you ask at Vauxhall, but it must have been available at sometime.

Not quite!  Wink Wink Wink

One of these
Smartcom makes your fridge & charging wiring a piece of cake, otherwise you're dragging cables rearwards to the boot from your alternator to switch an ordinary relay.

I have been following this thread with interest because I will be needing to fit a towbar soon and I would like to do it the 'factory way' if I can.

If I have understood correctly I should find:
1. a prewired socket in the boot (with link plug in for the fog lamps)
2. a 4 pin indicator relay socket with a 3 pin indicator relay fitted
3. a lamp holder in the instrument cluster (wired to the 4 pin indicator relay socket) ready to take a 1.2w warning lamp
4. a socket for a trailer brake failure relay (that is capable of bringing uo a message on the MID).

Am I close? I am thinking that the only awkward items to source would be the trailer brake lamp failure relay and the plug for the prewired socket in the boot.

Yes! Wink
I wouldn't think about the GM loom/plug to plug into your (round) socket, just use the wires to link from - don't use Scotchlocks though  Wink  You'd need the 8 connector GM 12N socket to go with it - mine came from Dr O and was one knocking about the workshop from an Astra.
The trailer check control 'relay' part number is above.  Thumbs Up!  Thumbs Up!
