Title: Other site
Post by STMO123 on 15. Aug 2006 at 20:20
I was just having a quick look at the other site and the latest question is about the lambda sensor. I was dying to give them a link to Marks latest offering over here. Is that the same as PMing them with another site address? [smiley=evil.gif]

Our URL is a censored word on their forum, so you wouldn't be able to give a simple URL...

Use a redirector (hint: Look at Taxi Driver's signature on VxON (assuming he hasn't changed it recently))

Yeah. Just had a look at TD,s profile and got what you meant. Looks like I could get barred, but i'll wait for a juicy thread before I try it [smiley=wink.gif]

They'll cotton on to that as well. Might as well just go out all guns blazing and just say something like 'Listen, you lot, if you really want to know about omegas...' and wait and see how long it stays there.

About ten secs ;D

So for the not to techies, how would you use the IP address?

I copied and pasted it into the address bar and it redirected immediately to the home page

Title: Re: Other site
Post by TheBoy on 15. Aug 2006 at 21:47
Please don't use the IP address.

Title: Re: Other site
Post by Martin Imber on 15. Aug 2006 at 21:49
OK

Any reason why not - so we understand?

Title: Re: Other site
Post by TheBoy on 15. Aug 2006 at 21:52
If I notice people are going to the IP, I'll add host headers to the Apache config...

This is a temp server. We may move to a new host at any point, or even to a new VM on the current server (one built for the task this time!), hence IP may change at any point without warning...

Title: Re: Other site
Post by Martin Imber on 15. Aug 2006 at 21:56
OK fair enough

Title: Re: Other site
Post by Taxi Driver on 15. Aug 2006 at 22:00
Ok....it appears VXon has noticed my link in my sig....and changed it to point to Vxon....i could say a choice few words at this point.....but dont think its worth it.....

But hey ive deleted that link and added a new one  ;) in my sig on vxon

www.decomputerservices.ltd.uk

Wonder how long they will take to notice that one!!  :-?

If you click on the link and it takes you to a 'holding' page.....give it an hour......its takes the DNS a while to take account of changes  ;)

Cheers

Bet BT will suck at DNS updates, Autotrader changed theirs at the weekend, took BT 2 days for the DNS to take affect on their servers  >:(

I have not used VM Ware in ages, i ermm 'patched' a copy for it to work, it was very usefull at the time for the programs i wanted to run. I orginally got it to run Mac OSX but it was not supported. Not been to their site for ages, do they support it now due to the Intel based Macs?

BT's DNS servers obey the TTL. If BT's DNS servers didn't update for 2 days, that would be the muppets at Autotrader not reducing the TTL before moving servers...

Sorry m8:

DNS: Domain Name Service - Changing domain names (google.co.uk) into ip address

TTL: Time To Live - This is basically a 'self destruct' for packets, if they get bounce around so many times they die... if packets did not have TTL value then the internet would ground to a halt....

Wow i remember something from lectures!  :o

I think we should all stand back and let them get on with it  over there
after all we are a forum for drivers of a Gentlemans carriage of distinction and quality
not the young louts and ner do wells that populate the "other site" driving there little cars hung with
spoilers (kev)!!!!!!

My only concerns are this

1) Omega owners not getting the support there they could here - with THREATS made against anyone mentioning this place. The THREATS are what caused me to get annoyed and what also caused me to get my membership cancelled (also at any other site I have used personal abuse from a mod would result in losing admin privilages)

2) The way that they are blocking this site, this is actually rude, most internet forums are happy to allow mention of similar but not quite the same forums, this is common in the electronics area where www.avforums.com (UK), www.avsforum.com (US) know all about each other with some shared membership, but no competition, or when mentioning TV with regards to digitalspy. There are a few others but it is good for all.

Apart from that let them get on with it - they are losing out not us!

I have to agree to forget about them,
I've PM'd a few new members suggesting they will get more / better help here, not suggesting they shouldnt remain there or anything, but no names I PM'd ever arrived here, and someone obviously took offence and 'dobbed me in' and got me banned.  No trouble to re-reg I know, but I wouldn't waste time over there.

I pop in there most days to see whats for sale or if anything useful is about, but there rarely is any more.

This is what I mean - they are the aggressors here not us!

Google will help us anyway, perhaps lack of help there will make them look elsewhere.

Not in this case - Time To Live in this case is how long should a caching DNS server or client cache the result for before requerying...

So if you wanna move IP, set the DNS TTL to, say, an hour instead of the usual 2 days or so...

This is what we have done, as to slagging - some of us - notably Finlay got rather a lot, and the problem was NOT caused by VXON site owner

Its history - do we really need to drag it all up again?

I know many of us got banned from VxON, and there was a lot of bad feeling, but we have already said that VxON slagging will not be tolerated here....

I'm not slagging or dragging up, just clearing up some points, basically of rudeness and intolerance.

They can go and get on with their petty squabbles missing any money from what they would have got if more of us had joined - I was considering before the problems, but was unsure.

Anyway time for a new policy, no mention of that site at all? Thoughts please?

Do we really need to keep going on about the other site at the end of the day this site was created for those who didn't get on with the other site.

To me best left well alone otherwise more debates appear which are unecessary.

Just my tuppence worth
