Can you see any of us owning an Omega when it qualifies being a classic?

My Kawasaki counts as a classic now, so nice cheap insurance :)

How does a car become a classic? Is there an official age, aminimum quantity left running or do insurance companies have a say on what they consider a classic?

Another question(I'm full of them), I understood that a car over 25 years old didn't need taxing, but I saw one the other day with a tax disc on it.

I think that rule about 25yrs was in 2002 when they last changed the rules, so I think its pre 1977 doesn't need tax...

A car becomes a classic in one of the following ways.

1 - Being a fast, small/medium ford. Escort Mexico/BDA twin cam -> Escort RS2000 -> Escort RS1600i/RS Turbo -> Escort Cosworth -> Focus RS -> Focus ST

2 - Capturing public imagination for the right/wrong reasons. Lotus Carlton -> Monaro

3 - A once common car becoming rare and evoking nostalgia Cortina -> Sierra

4 - Being a Jaguar (they get better with age)

5 - Being British and idiosyncratic, with the potential to be an offbeat classic Any 70's BL product , first Rover 825i/Sterling , Rover 75, MG ZT, esp 260.

Oddly, cars which are well respected when new, seem to fall from grace all too quickly. Look at how the E36 Bimmer has gone from middle management status, to council estate king pin in only a few years. The same is beginning to happen with the E46. The E23 seven is nowhere to be seen, the E32 has no classic status to speak off, only the 6 series and M series cars have any real classic cache.

Yes, I would like an Omega once it acheives that once common, none left classic appeal.

classic status is only age related for tax purposes, as for your opinion of what is a classic its just that an opinion

A car gets 'historic' road tax if it was built before 1 Jan 73. The original rules said that as cars got to 25 yrs old they would qualify but the shower of reprobates that were voted into power in 97 soon put a stop to that.  >:( You still need to display a current valid disc though - you just get them for f cuk all!  :)

The Tax Disc says Historic Vehicle on it and to cost is Zero.
You have to display the tax disc as you have to supply insurance and mot to get it.

So,basically, there will be no more free tax discs.(Unless you unearth old auntie Edna's Rolls in her garage)

When i was looking for a tax exempt vehicle to run the dvla said that the cut off point was 1971, ie any vehicle made upto  Dec '71 would be classed as "Historic" and would not require any licence fee paying. As far as I'm aware this is still the case.  I know of a couple of people who have bought '72/'74 cars and have had to pay a fee.    So I went out and got a '71 Beetle.  It's a great feeling when you go and get you tax disc, and they don't take any money off you. :)

I bet it is, I got close with with my MK1 RS2000 but missed by about 8 months :'(

dont mean to sound like a know it all  but i an sure a build date of pre aug 1973 is the cut off date for tax free classic it was changed in 2002 from a car reaching a proven 25 yrs old

i wonder how many omega will be around in 12 more years :-/

Non probably. But it'll be irelevant (sp?) cos your car needs to have been built before 01/01/1973 to qualify for free/historic road tax.
