Water in the oil could also be the Oil cooler failing/failed on the V6 models. Although there's a possibility of Headgasket trouble in this situation, I understand the V6 HGs are very resilient, and this is usually a cooler failure.

they way I understand it is,

Water in oil, head gasket.

Oil in water, oil cooler.

That amount of water in oil is most likely HG I fear...

Hmmm... does not look good.... have you checked for other HG tell-tale signs? Droplets with antifreeze smell in the exhaust fumes? Compression test?

Could still be oil cooler, it dumps a fair amount of water into the oil when the engine is stopped if its failed.

Do you do them with a flake?

I did try to post yesterday but got fed up when photobucket crashed the computer twice.

The waterways are all oil free and dry, as is the outside of the oil cooler (have taken loads of pics stripping the engine down)

That engine didn't get many coolant changes ....

Heads will probabaly want a skim and re-build before any re-use.

I love stripping engines down, much easier when removed to.

Am I right in thinking that the oil cooler wasn't so much of a problem on later engines?

So did I. They replaced them with stainless steel units bla-bla-bla, but the oil cooler failed on my 2001 2.6 engine at around 30,000 miles / 3 years! luckily the car was (just) still under warranty. So sadly they do fail, even on older models and younger engines!

When I saw your first picture, I was wondering why you took the engine out with the gearbox attached. Now I realised that what you actually did is cut the car away in bits until all was left was the engine and gearbox…
