Title: Leaking Cam Covers / Gaskets etc
Post by dave c on 09. Jan 2007 at 17:06
Gents, I'm already registered on VXON, found this site and noticed a few familiar names, nice to have a specific site for Omegas only..

Question:
I did my cam covers about 3 mths ago with non genuine parts ( Please don't laugh). The originals were only leaking on the right hand bank, then when removed they were rock hard in a few places...  Since putting the new ones on they now leak "Bloody everywhere"  they were perfect at first!  I also used the green sealant as per VX, I notice that you stipulate black  90485251...  is there a reason for this,  also do you think that my covers may have warped this quickly, or is it just knackerd gaskets again?  I beleive that the breathers were OK I could blow thru them...  with slight resistance...

Any advice appreciated..

Cheers Dave C

I know some of the questions you have asked have already been answered in the Newbie section.

You don't say what model it is.

You still need the black sealant, though, which ever the model.

The pattern camcover gaskets sold on ebay etc are useless, there are two types, one is a hard shiny plastic and will leak the moment you fit them. The second is a much softer material and looks identical to Vx parts but the material squashes down too much in use and after 3 - 4 months it begins to leak. So always use genuine Vx camcover gaskets and O rings from your local dealer.

Sealants:  The parts dept guys all seem to read EPC wrongly and give you green sealant.......WRONG!!!!!!!

The green sealant is for metal - metal joints such as under the front cambearing caps to seal them to the head. Only needed if cams removed.
The black sealant is used to help the camcover gaskets seal in the sharp 'corners' either side of each front bearing cap and at the corners of the rear 'Ds'.

Make sure you clean the crankcase breathers. I didn't get this done when my rocker cover gaskets were replaced and they went again a few weeks later.

Me and a mate are planning to do the rocker gaskets on my Omega next week. Giving ourselves all day to do it in case of an problems  :-?

I phoned up Vauxhall to get a price on both rocker gaskets (1 set per head), the 16 o-rings and the black sealant - came to £72 with VAT.

Not cheap, but might as well do the job properly as I don't fancy doing it again.....

Agreed,
Wish I'd have listened to folks prior to doing mine with the cheapies, I'm angry with myself mainly because I can get many VX genuine items at cost price from my local dealer, 3 hrs is all that's needed to do the job, with time to drink a coffee or two too.  I was gonna put new covers and every single gasket on, but thanx to you guys I'm well confident that this'll sort it this time...

Cheers DC
