Title: Headlamp bulb replacement
Post by lachleaves on 14. Jan 2007 at 11:29
I'm ashamed to say i can't work out how the devil to replace the headlamp bulb.

Does it make any difference that she's had xenon lamps fitted (not halogen - is it a different unit or just a different bulb?)

It's the dipped beam bulb on the driver's side.  I can't seem to get in behind the unit (air in-take box in the way)... what do I have to remove to get at it??

Many thanks,
Lachleaves.

For the halogen units, on the plastic trim at the front above the rad in front of the air box theres a big plastic fixing screw with a slot in it. Turn that 90 deg and that section should pop off. You'll find it a lot easier to get access to the rubber cover to the bulb then.

Connectors off, spring clip off, bulb out and reverse to replace.

I'm not sure about the Xenon units, but I don't imagine they're that different, but maybe wrong!

Be careful though (see my other thread today!)

When you say Xenons, do you mean the proper HID high voltage ones, as opposed to Xenon halogen type? If so, but hugely careful - the system can store high/leathal voltages even when off.  The buggers ain't cheap neither :(

Sorry, never attempted to change one, and manual says take to dealer...

I think it could be one of the 'expensive buggers'!

The previous owner spent a fortune on add-ons... so he probably had the proper xenon jobs fitted!  Would you believe it!?

Thanks

If it has HID (High Intensity Discharge) lighting there will be a box with a warning label and lightning flash on the back of each lamp unit and the cable to the lamp is about 8mm dia.

Many aftermarket bulbs are sold as 'xenon', these are the standard tungsten halogen lamps but with a little xenon gas added to make the light very white or blue-white in imitation of HID lights.

Do you have a manual headlamp levelling knob on the dash on the right hand side of the steering wheel? If so, it’s not HID as they are self-levelling.

It is very difficult to upgrade to Xenon HID, it involves new headlamps, headlamp washers, and self-levelling sensor etc.

So if the car did not have HID originally, it probably does not have one now…

If it is HID, the bulb is around £80 from Vx. See below:
