Title: Games consoles Post by Martin Imber on 14. Apr 2007 at 22:03
My wife has just bought a new games console - but it does nothing for me - whe asked if I went to Game to get some points, (half price if you buy something else) - whoops I bought a Logitec steering wheel for our older console.
So here we are with a new console with funny controllers (Wii) and I still prefer the PS2. Spent from trip to Halfords buying new spanners to Doctor WHo testing the steering wheel on GT4. So what is most fun, PS2 controller, Buzz buzzers, steering wheel, Eyetoy, Wiimotes, or Nintendo Class. Well got to be the wheel! FUnny how every one runs down the PS2 which had so many control options. My wife is a bit of a console nut with MEgadrive, SNES, Dreamcast among her previous purchases, I like PC gaming though! |

Wii is great fun and a great way to excercise
Think we have every games console on the market in here including wii ps1 / 2/ 3/ x boxes ....but then we do have a 9 year old ;) |

i always tend to play games on my PC....
I did a project on the Wii, interesting console, with accelrometers and IR to calculate the remotes position, makes for some interesting games... PS3 looks good and is powerfull, WiFi is great to, not sure its worth the extra over the xbox 360 though.... |

Ideally, you need the HDD on 360, so £250 ish. Performance wise, 360 and PS3 should come out about the same once the developers have got to grips with the PS3's processor. |

I want a PS3 as it is half the price of Panasonics BluRay player. However it does green screen via RGB for BluRay so is useless if you want to not buy DVDs since they are outmoded but still have an SDTV. However AFAIK the Panasonic player downscales. but is a substantial chunk of my HDTV budget, I have an offer of free PS3 instead of DVD recorder if I buy the TV I mentioned earlier |

When I was in my bedsit and if my then girlfriend had not brought her Megadrive around for a play, I used to use my Vic20 and cartridge games on my then new 25" Sony TV - some of those games were brilliant fun. Not saying more but it was easier in those days, and she is still a console addict and says they are for the children. |

I personaly am going to wait, its BetaMax / VHS all over again with BlueRay & HD DVD.... Agreed the xbox "Premium" is the one to go for, I hear rumours they will release a newer version to compete with PS3 (added WiFi) i think.... For the price of a PS3, you can get the Premium xbox 360 + a 20" LCD HD TV.... |

Looks under TV - yes a Beta deck (SLHF950 to upset the Beta fans) but BR looks like due to the PS3 it is outselling, and I hope it does better as 1) BR has a higher capacity, and 2) it is supported by the big companies like Pioneer, SOny and Panasonic |

Its the cost of the blueray player which pushes prices up, and at the last minite Sony removed a chip that makes it compatiable with many older games. Also games are 'locked' to each console, so can't lend games to friends.... if Microsoft pull their fingers out and release a WiFi enabled xbox, they could easily take the market share.... |

Sony have got it very wrong this time....
The PS3 is just far too expensive and, to the general public, is no better than the XBox 360. Especially when XBox is half the price, has a very established games catalogue and has very succesful (though far from perfect) online gaming. No, I suspect this will go on to cost Sony a LOT of money. |

But still half the price of a Samsung or Panasonic BluRay player - it is not just a games console - it is also a hidef disc player |

Title: Re: Games consoles Post by Sir Sideways on 15. Apr 2007 at 12:24
I have both the PS2 and XBox, I like them both equally and use one for playing some certain types of games and the other for other types of games and likewise will do with the XBox 360 and PS3 but, Im not able to afford either yet so im waiting till they both are within my price range (or until its either get an PS3 or Irmscher front bumper? lol)

Title: Re: Games consoles Post by laidback66 on 16. Apr 2007 at 07:53
Martin. The problem for Sony is that the PS3 is perceived (and marketed) as a games console first and foremost.
Yes it is a good Blu Ray DVD player, but there is little demand for that right now. The shelves are not exactly overflowing with Blu Ray DVDs. HD is the way forward, but it is still in its early stages and the formats need to be ratified befor there will be strong consumer demand. As I said, they have made a big mistake with this.... |
Title: Re: Games consoles Post by Phil on 16. Apr 2007 at 13:23
From what i understand the PS3 runs on LINUX, and is actually more a media centre than just a games console.
You can/ will be able to 'download' and upgrade and it will become more 'PC' orientated. More of the larger film companies are backing blue ray, so i doubt if Sony have made a balls up. Its definately more serious than the Mini Disc/ DAT war that never happened a few years ago, but mini disc did win that one, although not necessarily to the general public, a number of radio stations do use MD, and you can still buy MD but i haven't seen DAT for atleast 5 years. Aparently LG are bringing out a Blue Ray and HD DVD combined player later in the year, i would guess that will sell very well!! |

Not when it costs more than the top end BD players, and it would be cheaper to buy a PS3 and a HD-DVD player. Remember that the PS3 is one of the best BD players on sale in the UK |

Just use a wifi network adapter and you can make anything with an internal nic into a wifi enabled device, the apprentice has one for his xbox, (currently borrowed to run a media centre in the bedroom lol) xbox thinks its connected via ethernet the wifi box does the rest. |

I used to be a bit of a console nut myself. Having owned a megadrive, saturn, dreamcast, ps2 and xbox previously. I have to say I still prefer the PC over all of them for gaming. It wins for graphics, control options, longivity, internet and general day to day tasks. Closest runner up was the dreamcast. One of my favourite consoles. Such a shame they stopped production and making games for it :(
With my PC, I can either get my steering wheel ready for my racing sims (Live For Speed my game of choice), use the keyboard and mouse for my first person gaming, or use the joystick for my space/flight sims. The only problem is games can sometimes take a while to be ported on to the PC. It holds its own in the First Person genre though, and graphics wise, you will always see better on the PC. Also, if you dont have to splash out hundreds of quid a time when something new comes out because you dont have the right hardware. Small upgrades are usually easy to fit. |

I agree, as things have come a long way since the DOS based games of different boot configs for each game. However, if not a computer geek, the consoles have the advantage that a game bought for a console will just work - even now, sometimes with PCs, some friggin still required... |

I am another PC gamer :y PC's used to win hands down due the higher resolutions, playing on TV's just sucked. No detail. However now with HD TV, the tables are turning slightly. I am in a bit of a dilema actually: A) Buy xbox 360 + HD TV (be around £500 in total) B) Buy a better PC than can handle the newer games I have always prefered PC for games, take GTA Vice City for example. - Fantasic game, brilliant on the PC easy to aim with the mouse, easy to control. Bloody nightmare on the PS2... almost impossible to aim when not using "auto-aim" |
