Title: Soon to be Omega owner Post by JDMJut on 22. Aug 2007 at 21:43
Ez,
I'm looking to buy an Omgea as a run about in about 4 weeks or so, thought I better do some re-search. I need a car thats comfortable, cheap to buy, lots of room and can ocasionally tow a car trailor. The Omega looks like my best bet. I've decided on the 2.5 Turbo Diesel Estate, is there anything I should look out for? Common problems ect.. Is there a buying guide on here? I've had a search but I can't find one. |

Howdoo, and welcome to the forum. Feel free to pull up a keyboard and join in. :y
May be best to post queries and questions in general chat rather than the newbies bit, though. You will get a better response there. ;) |

You'll be needing a 3.0 V6 then! ;D ;) Welcome mate. Only had experience of the 2.2DTi but the 2.5 as you probably know, is a BMW derived engine. 'The Boy' will be only too happy to tell you all about it Size wise, apart from some of the old 9-series Volvos (which are just old hat now) you will not find a bigger estate around, E-Class Merc, 5-series BM, V70 volvo included. Hell, we sleep a family of five in ours :) Comfort, well, the seats are great, most are heated/electric and wear the miles well, the back seats are also some of the comfiest around, and well, it's rear wheel drive so it drives and rides like a proper car should. Not sure the 2.5 is the most reliable or economical engine around but will pull like a train, only available with auto transmission. Our 2.2 has towed a heavy Box-Van trailor for over 70k and certainly hasn't suffered as a result. They are the best tow cars around. All the best :y |

Sounds like you know your stuff, what would you sugest economy wise ? Any idea what the MPG would be like on the 2.5 ? I've seen the 2.5 advertised on Ebay in manual, I'd hate to have to settle for an auto. |

Welcome to the site :)
I have a 2.5TD with the BMW engine. It is available in manual and auto form (the earlier post about auto only is wrong). Trouble is, Vauxhall decided to use the cheaper, weaker auto box, so they detuned ALL 2.5TD engines to about 120bhp. If you have a manual, or change the autobox for stronger AR35 box, you can bump the performance back up - speak to our resident TD expert, Omegatoy (of Lotus Carlton engine in an Omega fame). I, personally, am not a fan of this engine. I think it was designed by a very stupid 3yr old. It is capable of huge mileage if looked after, but can fail in style if not. 4.5k is stated service interval, I would be considering 3k oil changes max. |

120 bhp ? From a 2.5 TD ? That's shocking. This is the sorta knowledge I need to be hearing about, what engine would you recomend ? I don't want to be spending the earth on fuel. Is there anywhere with the MPG's for the engines listed ? |

Only issue I have with mine is the rocker covers. Mine's one of the first (a 1994 2.5 V6 petrol) though and I think they changed the design in 1995 or 1996.
Only other issue I've heard about if the liquid gasket between the oil and water can sometimes go and be a bit of a bugger to fix. Never had any problems myself though. Have to say that since driving one everything else feels like a kid's home-made go-cart. Go for it! |
