Title: 2.0 belts....  Newbie so apologies for stupid
Post by Turky on 01. Oct 2007 at 14:25
Hi All,

I have just bought a 2000 GLS 2.0 auto which is lovely an comfortable on the road, runs fine and does reasonable MPG.

The car has a very dodgy history so i have given it a basic service, filers (oil and air), plug, leads etc and for the most part it needed it!!  I am wondering how hard it is to change the cam belt???  It looks ok but after seeing the oil that came out i would rather be safe than sorry so was wondering if anyone knwos hoe difficult this is to do for a novide with a haynes manual??!!  If i am likely to kill my engine please say so and i will stop going out for a while so that the local grease monkey can do it for me!! :o)

Many Thanks,

Simon

Hi Simon,

The 2L belt is pretty straightforward. The Haynes book covers it pretty well.

Important thing is to do the full kit - tensioner/rollers as well as the belt and usually recommended to change water pump at the same time as that is driven off the cambelt.

I'm in Woolhampton BTW - small world!

Cheers
Ian

okay 4 pot cambelt i havent done but cant be more difficult than 6 pot which is do-able.

Make sure if in doubt its replaced ( and your obviously in doubt) replace rollers as well as the belt.

Meantime id also have a good go at cleaning breathers and doing the "preventative" maintainance, have a look at the maintainance guides on here and work you way through the applicable service ones.

Frequent oil changes too ( more than the vx servic interval) if you think its not been that well looked after too. Maybe another in a few months... ;)

Hope it helps

I have a Video of James Doing Taxi Drivers 2.2 Cambelt. Its downloadable. We need something set up so members can pay a small Fee to the forum to download the file and a little more for the full sized DVD quality one also.

TB is there a paypal account owned by the forum so money can be payed to help keep the forum running

Don't forget, you will need a cam locking tool, Draper do one, it's about a fiver IIRC, and you will need a 30mm offset ring spanner.

you won't need the ring spanner for the 2.0, the idlers are non adjustable.

:)

4 pot easy enough - lock tool is about £5.  Do water pump at same time.

There is not an account for OOF, as OOF has no bank account.  The money from the hosting/email thing we do goes into my own, but under a different email address to make it easier to seperate from my own personal transactions. Not sure how the others deal with it.  As, at this stage, we do not want to be bogged down with being a club, we haven't gone down the lines of setting up bank accounts and trustees.

I agree with TB, usually, if anyone is stuck and needs the vid, I let 'em have it.
