Title: OOF Member distribution
Post by Albatross on 22. Mar 2008 at 01:10
I was wandering through another car forum earlier today and came accross a group of car owner members who have made use of a free feature on the net which allows us all to see where each other are. It has proven really popular and there are many members in the map I saw.

Obviously the more the uptake the richer the value, which is true of most web-based things really.

I've created a private area for the OOF members and you're all welcome to log on and add yourself. Please don't feel you need to give your EXACT location if you want to remain partially anonymous (mine is bang on), but it would be great to get a general idea of our distribution and proximity to nearby members.

To access the map click here

http://www.zeemaps.com/omegaowners

Please PM me for the password

If this catches on perhaps this could become sticky? (mods? I'd be happy to hand over the moderator password for you to change)

I used my address, but on any map on the net it is always out by 6 houses, must be to do with the post code covering quite a wide range.
:)
If you can't find me just look for the mig on the drive. :D :D :D

I've fixed the duplicate Simon, thanks for letting me know.

If you find that you've got a mrker in the wrong place, I can move it rather than create duplicates.

It is much harder to remove markers than move them.

Toward the end of the process it brings up a dialog box with fields of which 1 is your postcode with the last 2 digits missing.

Add your last 2 digits before clicking "Submit" and it will home in on you.

Someone has added a marker in Chirk near Wrecsham called "file28", who ever this is, may I add your OOF alias as an identifier to that marker? Durh! I've just spotted the post above, so "file28" is a genuine OOF alias, sorry. :-X

If the postcode isn't accurate you can identify your location by clicking on the map, but I didn't zoom it in enough first and got a house 3 doors down. Probably close enough.

At the moment it's all a bit random, but you and TheBoy are the site administrators, so I was going to discuss the perhaps we should set some guidelines.

My initial thought were to have a colour for each of you as both Admins and Tech2 owners, then perhaps a colour for those who have v6 cam locking kits, then other colours for other useful capabilities, such as wiring and elctrics.

Perhaps even a colour for type of car, but that might get a bit laborious.

What I thought would be worth avoiding is having a colour linked to the amount of posts / status as this would become a nightmare to administrate.

As mentioned right at the top, as you both are site admin, I'd be happy to hand-over or share the moderator password prvelidges with you and TheBoy if you want it.

Hi Mike, you're still showing 2 markers in Thailand; the 1st is in WanonNiwhat village and another in Wanbon, just on a lake and about 2 miles NW of the 1st.

Is this correct? If you need one of them removing let me know which.

Anyone going to claim it or was this a mistake? I can delete it and someone can try again, or I can populate the information and move it.

Let me know  :y

Going once!

Back in half an hour or so for "Going twice"

Three strikes and then I'll delete it as a mistake as it contains no information at all that might give a clue as to where it came from.

PM me your address and I'll do it for you. Either that or zoom right in, click on your marker and select "relocate" from there you can drag and drop your marker until you're happy then click "done" on the little po-up dialog box.

Job done.

From what I've seen on your posts / threads, you're more competent than many, many people I know with cars.

I'm also sure that people on here, me included, would be happy to pop down and help out if a real crunch issue came up and the car was undrivable.

What comes up in the bottom left of the white "bubble" when you left click on your marker on the map?

Maybe it's ecause I'm a moderator, but I get two words in red "Connect | Relocate".

If you don't get that then I'll try to log out and back in as a "member" and see if I can work it out.

Failing that PM me with your address, including postcode.

Yes, Buffalo is a border town. A Very busy crossing. Actually there are 3. All bridges. Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and Lewsiton. There were 4 but the Whirlpool Bridge was closed until they could beef up security. I used to go to Canada a lot but crossing has become such a pain that I don't do it half as often. The big draw nowadays is the Casino and I don't gamble. Owning a Catera is enough of a gamble for me.  :)

I've added some Candles identifying Newent, Keswick & Billing ::)..oh and some walk that Loo-Knee was on about ;D

Why? What's the significance of Keswick, Billing and Loo-Knee's walk?

Oh, and what's the significance of Glen Clova?

They are campsite's where we have had previous weekend meet's and the Lakes meet which is being organised for late june is in Keswick :y

So if we agree that meeting points are candles, may I ask someone to list the significance and notes on each of the following please? I will update each with notes in the bubbles so people can tell what they are.

Billing Aquadrome
Glen Clova
Keswick
Loo-Knees Walk (start)
Loo-Knees Walk (end)
Newent

I'm also considering producing some guidelines so we can see where the significant points are and will rename the colours in the key table.

For example, I was going to mark up TheBoy and MarksDTM as a colour to denote the presence of Tech2 devices.

If anyone can list who has v6 cam-lock kits that might be another useful marker denotion.

Another might be Vauxhall Trade Cards? (me for one)

Overlap combinations of the above would be other colour codes

I was then going to put all standard members as a consistent colour marker.

This way the colours of the markers will have some value.

Does anyone have any objections?

I have done this:

    *All members are red markers
    *All Admin are black markers
*All points of meets / interest are marked with a candle

Having us all the same colour helps to find the member you're looking for in the list more easily as it is alphabetical.

If you come up with any decent suggestions without breaking down the list too much, such as "Trade Card Holders", then let me know and I'll change it.

TB, I've been digging and there doesn't need to be a "sticky thread".

I wonder if I should pick this up as PM / e-mail?

I can arange with you guys to "publish" the map on here, it is minimal work and is supported by zeemaps. I thought that perhaps the best place for it would be off the members' page as a locator link.

It would not take the user off OOF, just publish the map and functionality within an OOF page.

I'd need to discuss with whoever maintains the site (is that Hotel21?) to check feasibility.

As stated from the outset, if this catches on, I'm more than happy to hand over the admin/moderator password.

Personally, I think its a good idea and one that has been mooted previously.

Much as I would like to say that i am the chap that maintains the site, unfortunately as a computer or internet wizard, I would make an ideal domino player.....

If you want to relinquish the maintenance of the concept, I would take it on rather than see it dying a death but, be warned, I am not the best when it comes to things computer....   :D

I'm more than happy to  completely relinquish, share or continue to help maintain that section if I can help at all.

What I think might be really valuable is to set this into a page on the OOF (perhaps off the "members" page). The zeemaps site has a facility which allows you to publish the map inside your own website which would mean that the members never need leave the OOF to locate a fellow member.

It would mean the creation of a new page which I can provide the text to insert that would allow the map, and functionality, to be published inside the OOF.

I'm pretty convinced this is a very simple task; given what you claim about not beign the best with computers, are you the best person to speak with about the development / enhancement of OOF pages?

This is a really simple, but very valuable "quick-win" as they say. :y

Would you be able to create a test page that we could work together on?

I have the text that would need to go into an i-frame. This would allow people to make additions and search form members on the list.

Can we switch to e-mail? This might be better to converse as I don't want to publish the publish text in a post (If you know what I mean :y )

Hi,

i've just checked back after getting home from work and there are now 2 "No Name" entries: 1 near Plymouth and 1 in Fairfield, Stockton on Tees.

I'll be removing these unless they are claimed, anyone want to stake a claim?

I'll remove by end of play tonight unless I hear. :y

I'm guessing at (assuming) JayW for the unclaimed near Plymouth as he isn't named on the list, says he is very "South" and joined up only last night. His profile also says "Plymouth/Epsom"

And I'm guessing that Geoff had some issues and double entered as he is very close by and only joined up last night too. His profile also says "Stockton-On-Tees".

If anyone genuinely lives on Culross Grove in Fairfax, sorry I deleted your marker as it had "no name". :-?

Richard, initially thank for the appreciation :y

I really don't want to come accross as ungrateful/ungracious, but I don't think that VRN numbers is wise as it might pose a security risk (ID Theft), vehicle cloning etc.). I also don't know if that particular peice of information would add much value, but I do thank you for your appreciation and suggestions generally.

Hi. Totally agree about adding reg numbers as i may have been a victim of number plate cloning recently. Perhaps as members do show pics of their cars under their forum name or in the gallery section they may consider blanking out the reg numbers as well. Anyone as a guest to the forum can see the pics. Lets face it, it's the cars we admire...not the number plates.

I don't think that this is the case, or particularly fair; Hotel21 and I are actively investigating a method to embed and publish this map functionality within the OOF.

Point noted Richard_A.  It becomes even more confusing, however, if two threads are running concurrently but seperately on the same subject, hence merging your initial post into the existing thread.

Hi Albatross,
I've managed to correct my location but can't delete the one I don't want. Junction of Links Ave. & Churchill Ave. is the correct one, if you wouldn't mind deleting the other for me, please.
Thanks,

Can you rename the one you don't want to "Delete me" please?

Thanks

I am sorry, and worried, you feel there is some other motive at work  :'(

It was mentioned in Suggestions area, and I admit that I didn't think it would be that useful (enough to warrant the workload - setup and ongoing), but I did say that if there was demand....   ....nobody really posted up either way, so I assumed that my view about no real demand was correct.

However, now it is real, and appears to be very well received by members, it will be remain for the foreseeable future.  Albatross has done a greta job on the initial work, and Hotel21 will lead in the ongoing updates.

The success has caught me by surprise, so give me a few days to sort a way of integrating it (initially probably by linking).

Please feel free to contact me or one of the other admins/mods via PM - I am concerned about your comments...

It's difficult to get the right house, the closest I can get to is the middle of the postcode generally.
In your case I've counted the chimneys and then noticed a load of cars parked up at what I reckon to be the end of your garden.

I''ve plopped the marker on where your Miggy most probably is.

How do you fix it?

Click on your marker, the bubble will pop up; then you "should" see "Connect | Relocate" in the bottom right.

Click on "Relocate" and the rest should be pretty self-explanatory. :y

Just to add my two penneth, this has to be thought about with some security in mind. The forum is open to browse by anyone without registering, this means that anyone in the whole world can connect to the internet can find out exactly where we live (and potentially where your vehicle is parked)..... It needs some sort of security other than a password published on a public forum.

Please don't get me wrong, the concept is brilliant.  :y

Than would a mod please modify my initial post to remove the line that includes the password and then replace it with.

"PM me for the password".

There may be another mention of it in the thread somewhere by another user. I'll find it and let you know the post number to modify.

That way only members can PM me for the password.

Once this is "embedded", surely we can limit access to the page to members only?

Sh!t, you're quicker then me! :y

I only found them just before you had changed them!

Thanks for that.

A couple of quick questions:

    1. Is my profile only viewable by members?

    2. If so, is there a way to put the password into my profile so that members only can check my profile for the password?

This would save me a lot of PM management :y

Another thought was that rather than the "sticky" on the Newbie area, how about a line in the welcome e-mail that tells a new member about the map? Just an idea :-/

Title: Re: OOF Member distribution
Post by hotel21 on 26. Mar 2008 at 21:00
There are various options under discussion regarding the best way to manage this within the forum, not least of which is a tab along the 'home, help, search etc' line which would show access to the map.

Please bear with the admins. When they are satisfied that general as well as personal security is adequate, we will implement....   :y

It will be better once Jaime has managed to get the thing embedded. Then we'll be able to get members only straight on without the password.

I think that a "one liner" in the welcome e-mail that people get, or the welcome PM when you join would be useful to tell the new members about the map and the password.

I'm more than happy to support it though with the guys as the pain is somewhat my fault.

PM Sent to Cant Beta Omega 3ltr

Member's who are on this locator have a free choice as to how accurate they feel they want their marker to be. It is possible to change your address, but not move your marker later. Most members have tried to put thir markers accurate to at least street level as this increases value. On occasion they have had problems and asked me to move their markers for them later to nearer their correct position; one member even ended up in the North Sea!

The most accurate way to place your marker is to zoom in on your section on the map and enter your full address (at least make your postcode accurate) and then place your marker carefully before finalising it.

It is then possible to go back into, and edit, your address to make is less exact if you so wish.

Yes there is a risk of abuse, which is one of the reasons that this is password protected. There is ongoing technical work being undertaken by the moderators and administrators to embed the map into a members' only area such that it is only available to OOF members.

In the interim, I do take the liberty of veiwing your profile and reviewing your posts to determine your length of membership and general demeanour to determine whether it is appropriate to share the password; my reasoning it quite simply this; I work on the premise "would I feel comfortable allowing this person to see my marker and those of what I consider to be my trusted OOF compadres". Other members do the same or similar; I hope you understand.

The password is: ***********

Welcome

Nathan (albatross)

Hi Albatross
Thanks for sending the codename and explanation, I have put myself on the map now, Its a good idea for a group like ours, because there is a meeting near me this Sunday (at donnington services J23 on the M1 ) ,I am a new member, and I am thinking about going, its nice to see there are several other owners quite near me,

There is a slight problem with the map location I put my full address including postcode and amended it later like advised but its put my marker about a mile up the road from me I actually live at *************** which is the road not shown on the map just Between ********************* and *********************

My full address if it helps you is :- **************************** *********************************************************************************************************

Got your PM, marker has been moved.

Hi Albatross
Thanks for sorting out the problem of ZeeMaps putting me in the wrong place, Its now dead right
My old position is still on the map so it looked like I had 2 houses, Thanks ZeeMaps, its like having a win on the Lottery! I don't want the Tax office investigating me so I have marked it for deletion
By the way your car "The Miggenium Falcon" a real beauty what colour is that ?

Or simply click on "Map" in the oof header menu!

Yes it is a good idea, and will be joining :y :y :y

My job is a Service Delivery Manager for a software solutions provider. I sometimes find it difficult to realise that I'm actually still doing what I do for a living when I'm not supposed to be.

I must have been doing that line of work for too long now. :-/

Sticky is an option, but is a PITA for admins. TB was supposedly going to work with me on gettign the map embedded thereby allowing members to get straight in with no password required (single sign on stylee), but that seems to have died a death.

I have made another suggestion which I think could work. I'll make it a poll and see what thoughts come back...

So what to do about the OOF Map and getting the word out to new members and those that haven't stumbled accross it yet?

Title: Re: OOF Member distribution
Post by skruntie on 11. May 2008 at 19:39
Why not add a link for the OOF Map in the welcome letter that is sent via email when a new member confirms thier email.

Also in the email it could be pointed out to drop in and say Hi in the wecome section, and that by filling in thier car details it will be easier to get help..

A global reminder could be sent out regards the map and car details any way.

Sorry if it creates any work for the admins, but in the long run I would hope it would actually save work and save reminders from current members eplaining it over and over to new members.

Theres a link on here to a place in the West Mids

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1161091674

I have added a new type of marker in purple to denote "Alignment Centres" and then added the above 5 sites to the map. I have changed W.I.M. to a purple marker too.

Did you know? If you click on the marker type on the legend at the bottom left of the map it removes that type of marker from the map termporarily. This is handy if you want to remove all the members' markers to see the remaining "meeting points" and "Alignment Centres".

BTW: Someone has been clicking the Map Password button fairly frequently recently and I keep getting e-mails. Please PM me, or an admin, if you need the password.

Thanks

BOTH OF THE ABOVE SAME ISSUE - SAME ADVICE

TOP LEFT:

Click "Show List"

From the list which has now appeared on the right hand side of the screen select "Your Name"

Click on your Marker which is now highlighted on the map.

At the bottom right of the dialog / speech bubble is a small icon with an arrow on it. when you roll the mouse cursor over it a box comes up that says "relocate".

Click that little icon.

You can now move your marker anywhere you like on the map.

Repeat until happy. :y

Do which bit Jimbob?

EDIT: Yes I was. I have jsut logged in as a member and found the limitation.

I have changed the settings of the map now so that each member can add markers, but not change anything on eachothers'.

When you initially create a marker you recieve a dialog box with a unique  URL. KEEP THIS URL/LINK - IT IS YOUR KEY TO EDIT YOUR MARKER ONLY!!!

Visit the page and add it to your favourites. :y

'ordinary' users dont seem to have that option :

At the bottom right of the dialog / speech bubble is a small icon with an arrow on it. when you roll the mouse cursor over it a box comes up that says "relocate".

Click that little icon.

You can now move your marker anywhere you like on the map.

This is a standard text answer, so I apologise if the information provided is like teaching a granny to suck eggs. This is just a mini FAQ to save me some time.

Please follow the instructions/tips below first and then let me know if there are any further issues by adding a post to this thread:

HOW DO I ADD MY MARKER?

Centralise eh map on your home location and zoom in until you can see your street clearly. Set your street/house to about 1 cm from the far right of the map (You'll see why in a minute)

Top Left - click "Add" --> "Marker"

Follow your nose, by adding your address. It will have a link on that dialog where it allow you to place your marker by clicking on "Map Select a location". Use this link as it will help you to make sure your marker is accurately positioned.

When you initially create a marker you recieve a dialog box with a unique  URL. COPY AND KEEP THIS URL/LINK - IT IS YOUR KEY TO EDIT YOUR MARKER ONLY!!!

Suggestion: Visit the unique URL/LINK page and add it to your favourites for future reference.

HOW DO I MOVE MY MARKER IF IT ENDS UP IN THE WRONG PLACE?

Visit your unique URL/LINK to access/change your marker.

Make sure your address is accurate.

Change the "MARKER" type in the drop down list to "MOVE"

PM me and ask me to move your marker to the address.

HOW DO I FIND MY MARKER ON THE MAP AMONGST EVERYONE ELSE'S?

TOP LEFT:

Click "Show List"

From the list which has now appeared on the right hand side of the screen select "Your Name". NB: List is sorted by Cpaital letters 1st and then alphabetically (Zorro appears before apple, but Apple appears before Banana)

Click on your Marker which is now highlighted on the map.

You can also remove the types of marker by clicking on the legend of marker types at the bottom left.

Been quite a few clicks on the OOF "send me password" link recently and about 3 this morning, so I thought I'd put up this as a little reminder.

PM me, an admin or another member who appears earlier in this thread if you need the password. :y

That is supposed to mean "ditto"; quite a few e-mails received lately to remind me of the passwords I already know.

Don't click on the password button people. PM me or an admin for the password if you need it.

Thanks in advance

No need to drag up old thread for this - there is a perfectly good tab near the top of all pages that says Map.
