Title: More than a dusting of dust
Post by Nickbat on 26. May 2009 at 17:17
The PC was playing up over the weekend, doing some very odd things. For example, when I went to select a directory in Explorer, it would select them all. When I wanted to open a bookmark in Firefox, it asked if I really wanted to open all 273! Also, my work programmes started to behave oddly. I checked for viruses, but had none. :y

I then noticed that this was the first "hot" weekend of the year and, from previous experience, overly hot PCs can do some odd things. Today, everything is back to normal but, to be on the safe side, I just hoovered out the inside. The amount of dust inside the CoolerMaster fan was just unbelievable, as was the dust inside the three exterior fans. ::)

Hopefully, my weekend problems were just down to my machine getting too hot under the collar.

That's one of the 1001 uses of the compressor that you "need". Blowing dust out of your PC. Get yourself down to machine mart. :y

With such force of air, wouldn't there be a chance of blowing dust into a HDD?  :-/

Probably best to avoid the HDD, TBH, although they have very small, and very well filtered, vent holes.

It will completely clear a power supply of dust just by blasting into the fan louvres for a couple of seconds though.

That's not a model name or number Nick.
Harman Kardon sound systems are fitted to quite a few satellites, as well as the Centrino mobile chip.

Both the model name, and model number will be on a sticker which is on the underside of the laptop.

Yes it is, you access the CPU fan by removing the keyboard.

Remove the securing strip at the top of the keyboard by prising one end up with a small flat screwdriver, use your hands to remove completely.

Remove the screws at the top of the keyboard, lift keyboard up, and disconnect ribbon cable.

Your CPU fan is now accessible.
If you are going to remove the fan/heatsink assembly, you will need to clean the old heatsink compound from both the heatsink & the CPU and reapply new compound.

Do NOT make the mistake of getting carried away when applying new compound, anything more than a fine layer will have the opposite effect of what it is supposed to do.

for those who will use pressurized air ;

the notches of cpu cooler sometimes not strong and goes out (dont ask me how that happened)..which I successfully end up with ;D

so first check them..if happens, you need more silicone and some extra work  ;D
