noise from rear, but goes when I turn right. Am I right in saying this is the rear O/S bearing? and if so, what do these cost for mt 3.2 MV6.

Thats interesting Jimbob, I thought as I was taking the load from the right, thats why the noise stopped? Hence the question. Now we are both confused :-? :-?

My estate was a blank of a job, but they can be easier if not seized.

Not me doing it, so not fussed, just need to be sure which one it is. Anyone got a trade card in or around Lowestoft, Sufolk?  :)

When turning right, the weight is biased to the left side, so if the noise lessens then it's the right that is suspect.
I've used this method to check the front bearings a couple of times in the last 8 years with Migs and it's proved pretty reliable.
Not had an issue with rears as yet. (Hope I've not tempted fate now ::))

As a rule of thumb mate, i would change both bearings on the rear, as if one is shot the other may not be too far behind it, so play it safe change both. :y

Thanks, sounds like I will be changing both then. I just changed three on the vectra to find out the noise was the cheap tires I had put on >:(

Hi, there is no need to change both. Dispite what garages will tell you there is no evidence at all about wheel bearing failing at the same time. Suspension and brakes you do in pairs but not bearings. You will get next to no warranty on bearing life, the new one is every bit as likely to be the next one to fail on the car.
I fitted a pattern one 5 yrs ago and it is fine, only cost £17 from partco.

If it ain't broken...don't fix it ! ;D

I remember when a rear bearing went in my old Monza, mechanic was very clear that there's no rhyme or reason to when they let go so I should just do the one that was busted. Not something I'd attempt myself as the process of getting the hub out is pretty involved and that's before you try and separate the bearing!

On a different note: Evo 500 avatar, Monza username, how come you're not in the Autobahnstormers? Trade club membership is part of the service!

Lapsed some time ago and not got round to signing another cheque! Should do really. I dont know who owns my old Evo 500 now?   

I had a wheel bearing fail years ago on the rear of my MK1 Carlton but the noise was speed dependent rather than load dependent (live rear axle though so may not be relevant).

When I got my Omega (at 130K miles) the inner rear brake pads were seized in the calipers due to rust and the inner faces of the brake disks were rough enough to make intermittent grumbling noises that had me convinced that the wheel bearings needed changing.

I would check that the rear brake pads are free to move before ordering new wheel bearings.
