Possibly overheating.
Very common problem on laptops. Get some compressed air and give it a blast down the air vents (then choke in the cloud of dust!) ;D |

When you first switch on, you should see a message on screen that says "Press DEL to enter setup" (the word DEL may be replaced by F2, F10, etc). Press the relevant key when prompted to enter the BIOS (setup) and let it sit there. If it switches off just doing that, it's odds on a hardware problem. |

If by fairly new, you mean less than 12months, get currys to replace it. |

Have you looked at your settings? You can set it to turn off after 10 mins of being idle.

Yes, check your power settings. If all OK, also try to disconnect everything including USB devices, etc. (but power cord) and see if it does the same. Some cr@p USB drivers by cr@p programmers stop the PC coming back gracefully from standby, so you might think it's been turned off. |

As KillerWatt says, does it do it in BIOS?
If so, overheating is a likelihood, particularly if its a cheap chinese rebadge, or you have pets. |

I took my old uni laptop to bits every year, clean out the heat sync and vents. After the rebuild it ran silent, and noticeably cooler! |

Mine did the same before i went away. What's is your's make ?. Pc world found nothing wrong but i have noticed i don't have to use a pass word now to start the lap top plus and now it's a lot quicker. When i called their " The tech boys" that's what they call them i was told in the end there was a problem with the way the password program worked. |

Yet another quality diagnosis from PC World, sounds like they have put a password on the BIOS, did you ask for this? I would put a fresh copy of Windows on, the high street shops install way too much crap. |

The reality is that it is the manufacturer who includes all the crap that slows the machine down unnecessarily, and the restore CD/DVD the end user is prompted to make at first switch on (because the manufacturer is too tight to include a disc that costs less than 5p) will also include all that unnecessary crap. The only way to have a true clean install of any OS is to use a retail disc, but you won't see something like that included with any laptop (or desktop) computer if you buy from a "supermarket" manufacturer these days. |

Got a point, the only benefit of those CD's though is that its an image and re-builds are fast. Could re-build my uni laptop within 40 mins. Compared to a generic install which took longer, then had to fiddle around with drivers. Maybe just re-build and go through the entire contents of Add/Remove progras and ditch the lot, never as good but as close as you could get. |

40 mins from a restore disc???? Dude, I set Win 7 up on my machine (start to finish) using a retail disc in 13 mins....add another 10 mins (tops) for the driver installs....that's it. If a "restore" takes 40 mins, you really need to consider proper restore software IMO. |

Feked Sony DVD player :-X It was a sony laptop ::) 40 mins was start to finish, from old build to back to standard setup, with apps installed. |

About 25mins to put my images back on my laptops. Mainly because I do this over the network, and the DOS IP stack isn't exactly speedy ;D (about a 3G image).

If there is no problem whatsoever in BIOS (after you stating it does it in Windows when left alone), then it's a software problem (which you can't claim under the guarantee for). |
