Title: Day 6 and bambi still eludes.... Post by Guffer on 27. Nov 2009 at 12:30
Been sat for a total of 40 hours on my uncle's rather nice but chilly forest and still not seen a single (live) deer to shoot at! Only one in our party has managed to shoot a young buck and the landowner and I have yet to see one at all! A lack of snow is not helping although it is below zero here. Even with thermals, 4 layers of t-shirt, jumper, jacket and over trousers I can only mange 3 hours before getting weak and coming in from the cold....
Well it's opening time again so off I go.....here bambi bambi bambi......! |

the nearest thing i do to hunting is fishing, but even then after having enjoyed their sport i return them alive, its a personal choice i guess but personally shooting an animal in the name of sport is one ive never quite understood. :'( :'(

It's a man 'hunter gatherer' thing I think. I love venison but could never get my own!

If hunting for food ... good .. if hunting for the sake of it .. bad
If for the former .. can I claim a haunch for supporting you .. :) |

I used to work with a couple of guys who did shooting, trapping, hunting with dogs and lamping I think you call it. Yes they where both poachers.
Never saw the appeal I am afraid. But then if someone else did not catch/butcher the meat then I imagine a lot more of us would be vegetarians. I will not judge anyone who does this, I no I could not do it, but then I eat the meat, so does that make me the same as them ? |

Ok, a few points:
- I eat what a hunt/fish (putting some fish back is too traumatic for it, mackerel for example) - I enjoy hunting (or I wouldnt do it) - I have the hunter/gatherer gene, so what - If you think what I do is wrong then go to an abattoir and see how the meat you eat is killed. A lot less humane then the clean shot through the heart/head/neck that I do (I can hit a tennis ball at 200m with an iron sight) - The deer in the UK is over populated because of a lack of predation and the fact we don't hunt them. Think about that next time you hit one on the road (that is if you survive) write off your car/end up in hospital/lose a friend. Bambi is still at large, for now ::) ;D ;D ;D Peace :y |

I agree with the general consensus here... I don't just shoot for fun, I eat what I shoot. There's a difference :y :y

You need a Megane Coupe to hunt one with - and he didn't even hide the carcase :(

Everything I shoot when out on the land is used, If we don't eat it, the buzzards do, and I don't shoot foxes because they keep the vermin down. Would love to go deer stalking, might do it next year :y :y

My brother tried hunting with a Megane Coupe. A bullet would have made a better projectile than his bonnet, I believe. ::) Kevin |

If you cant find any Bambi,s where you are Guffer you should come and give North Essex a try.The bloody things are everywhere, they keep running out in front of me when Im on my bike, which can be a tad unnerving.Came close to having a set of antlers imbedded in the front og it several times. :y

To date we've hunted sucessfully with a Volvo 940, a Peugot 406 & a Fiesta. That's 3 write-offs & I'm not talking about the deer who still visit my garden nightly & eat the shrubs, flowers etc. |

Difficult one this.
Over here in County Kerry red deer are a nuisance and I personally have lost 100's of Euros if not a thousand worth of plants eaten at will by a family that use my garden as their own free Tesco's. I have spent ages erecting wire mesh fencing around my 1.5 acre site to keep them out and still curse them when I find the evidence that they have been back. But on the other hand I've just spent a very difficult week trying unsuccessfully to find a home for a female deer that was living on a clients estate that we manage in his absence. This deer, "Roberta ", had been reared by hand by a couple of Polish guys who found her after she had been injured in an illegal trap as a young fawn unfortunatly they have returned to Poland and she was set free to fend for herself. She took up residence in this small but perfect for her , estate feeding off the well stocked borders around the house. She had absolutley no fear of humans and actually seemed at home around us nuzzling into you like a dog. Unfortunatly the owner had had enough of the destruction and the fact that she defacated all around the very expensive Liscanna stone walkways and patios. Anyway, the owner instructed a local to "remove " poor Roberta on Wednesday this week but didn't inform me until after the event . Here she is on Wednesday morning , :'( |
