Title: The future of the Web
Post by Nickbat on 13. Dec 2009 at 23:16
I read with interest this blog about UK government control of the web.

http://www.devilskitchen.me.uk/2009/12/destroying-web.html

The questions are: "Would they?" & "Could they?"

I invite comment!  ;)

"The fence posts for a totalitarian regime" - couldnt have put it better.I came to the conclusion long ago that this shower had seriously devious motives and this type of info reinforces that belief. :y
Further evidence was given by Bliar yesterday when he said without shame or any sense of irony that if he had known Saddam had no WMD he would have told parliament a different story to get the same result.Beyond wicked imo, when you consider the young lives which have been sacrificed there.

"would they?"-yeh ,IF they could.
"could they?"-nope. Theyd just be constantly chasing their tales as its just too big a thing to control with too many knowledgeable people out there who could get around whatever "controls" they try to exert. To me its like the issue of ID cards. Yes it would work on the vast majority of people but ultimately its a waste of money as the people you really want to control ("terrorists" etc ) will always find a way around it

I think they are much more interested in controlling the majority than anything else, but they constantly use terrorism as the excuse. These are the same people who religiously voted against the Prevention of terrorism act, when it came up for its annual renewal when the "troubles" were ongoing  in Northern Ireland. ;)

Given how much data flows every second, they dont have a hope in hell of monitoring it, let alone storing it for future reference.

Having just been involved in the implimentation of port mirroring, which is intended to support legal intercept, its a lot harder to do then you would ever imagine.

For a start they would need a new network and double the capacity just to even route the data to even a local collection point!

Just monitoring certain individuals is a logistical nightmare, let alone millions of people.

They cant even finish the IT systen for their baby, the NHS. It would cost a fortune and there's no way (at the moment) that they could hide that size of expenditure.
