Thats actually a very generous trade in, even sold private on Autotrader, you will be lucky to get £700 I am assuming its between 1998-2000 Plate |

depends how old it is, if its an early one then I would say its not an unreasonable price from a garage

Not bad for a trade in but I'd push for some more... It's worth £2k against a Brand New car ;) ;)

Best bet is to sell it privately and then go and wave the cash under their noses. :y

I'd say that price is pretty reasonable. In any case you will always get more for a vehicle selling it yourself then trading it in. However, it's all based on convenience. It's whether you want to sell it yourself or just get rid of it quickly? You can always ask for an extra £50. I'm a motor trader, and if the deal hangs on an extra £50 or so then I'm normally happy to give it to them if it gets the sale.

he would put it on the forecourt for about a grand or more and depends on what you are buying off him?

Thats allways the best way if possible. I bet if you sold the car for £400 and went to buy the one you were after and told him the deal was £400 less than the wondow price you would drive it away. Plus if you pushed and asked for a valet, a set of mats and a good set of rubber all round with a 12 month ticket on you would get that as well. Just rember it's the worst time of the year for dealers at the mo. Just be prepared to call his bluff and play hard to get. It's a battle of wills with a dealer, and they tend to offer the same on a part ex as the ammount they would discount. (Dependong on the part ex of course) The part ex if not worthy of the fore court is theyn sold off via the back pocket. :-X |

Gave a very shy mate of mine the same advice. He took his girlfiends daughter to a dealer with a knackered fiesta ( she was happy with scrap value) but they tried to see what he would offer. She had a set budget for a stunning 307 in black that had taken her eye. They offered £200 P/x Not sure on what she had budget wise. ut the deal ended, with a wheel arxh scrape being stripped/sanded/painted. A full valet. Set of mats. A full set of alloys off annother car with decent branded rubber A set of mud flaps 6 months road tax 12 months MOT and a 3 months mecnical/parts/labour warranty with 6 months on the body work. She also ended up with a equivelent of a £550 P/x The exhaust correded and started to blow on one part so he sorted that by fitting a complete new one. just as the warranty ended. Excellent deal was done and all partiesseemed happy. Her Mother was so cheffed with the deal my mate was sent back to do a deal to get her a newer car. Same sort of deal, just as good a service. All 3 of them now drive various pugs of 06/07 reg and for once it's nice to hear of a dealer with good after sales back up. Plus I think they sussed they fiesta was fubar when it was driven in. So my point is, they allways allow a cash / part ex allowance, if they get a good car for what they would have allowed as a discount then they are quids in. Plus if you remeber the volvo the jeremy clarkson (or whatever the car was) got for a £1Then you do the sums and work out the fiddles. (Now you know why so many cars are being sold by ladies - Dealers wifes Buy for a £1 and sell for a grand)) :-X |

got 400 for my old 145k 99 2.5 cdx when i traded it in for my current 3.2 Elite. 2.5 was in very good nic though. Should have kept the old car when comparing bodywork to this one, twas mint.
Anyway, seems fare money to me, but more to be had private sale if you can stand the agro. Dealer will look to get 500 minimum profit on any sale, so expect to see it on his forcourt for just under a grand. 700 ish private depending on nic, all as said really :-) |

Doesnt seem too unreasonable for a garage trade in. Mine is an Sreg 2.5v6 CDX with leather. I purchased it 2 years ago with 112k on the clock but ensured that the garage did a new cambelt change and fixed the leaking rockercover first. Paid just over a grand for it but dread to think how much she'd be worth now even though she's in pretty good nick and has had the oilcooler done :(
