Yep we have a silver Phillips one and videos to play too.

My dad bought his first video top loading one in 1982. Our first serious recording was the summary highlights of the 1982 world cup which was the first one I can remember properly.

Did you get up early and climb into the loft just for one more post?

Yep, still got two and still use them almost weekly. Have a DVD recorder aswel but find it so much easier to record on VHS.
I believe a hard disk recorder comes close, but VHS stops when I push stop and starts again from where I left off, even a few days later, my dvd recorder won't do that.

I have a VCR still, not that its connected up to anything.  Only reason i kept it is for my BTCC vids.  I have 1988 throught to 2000 on video.  I may get round to ripping them to a dvd one day.  Seems like effort though ;)

Title: Re: Come on, 'fess up...
Post by jereboam on 18. Dec 2009 at 11:56
We've still got one connected up.  The hard disc recorder will only record one channel at a time, so if there's two things on I want to record, I use the VCR. Anyway, I've still got about 40 tapes the wife wanted converted, which I haven't got round to doing yet - absolute pain - has to be done in real-time, and don't have any proper way of timing it, so I can't let it run overnight.  Well, I can actually, but then I've got to edit the recording.  Pain. :(

A couple of VHS, a Video8 and a MiniDV.

As for 'ripping'.  It's more like 'peeling'.

What model was it?

Some are still worth about £500.

Yeah I've got a VHS for occasional use. Thing is older laptops are very cheap, so I got an Acer Athlon 64 laptop which I have dedicated to digitising videos, and fitted with a PCMCIA capture card.

I just revamped my recording machine with a new motherboard, masses of ram, a AMD 64X2 processor and 3 Nebula DVB-T cards so I can  record up to 3 complete multiplexes at once. Trouble is finding anything worthwhile recording  :P

Nearly forgot, the problems with being able to record several programs at once is you never get time to watch them all. I have got several 500GB drives full of films still to be watched. :P

Two and they are not Betamax either. Once the technology has "settled down" for Hard disk recorders or Blue Ray or Blue teeth or whatever then we may convert. We are also thinking of getting a colour TV soon but we are waiting to see whether LCD or plasma is best.

Sorry, but i stepped into the digital age last year...
All of my dvd's are now on a net-top pc, so all i have to do is click on the file and it plays it on my tv  :y
But haven't had a video or player for about 3 or 4 years

However there is one place tape is best and that is with video cameras.

Least compression and an automatic archive of you footage.

MiniDV is excellent

Wow!  There's a name to conjure with.  About the only compensation for working on contracts in Belgium and Germany was the Russ Meyer films on late night TV.

Didn't need subtitles...  :) :) :)
