Cut a long story short, all 4 corners!  :-X

Front aren’t bad at all, will just need to properly reseal the awning rail. (on my list to do - I’ve temp put some sealant over the top of the old)

Rear N/S is the worrying bit. top of the wall in the shower is soft (about a foot wide by a few inch's down)

I've removed that rear quarter of the rail, and resealed it with fresh IDL99. When I was refitting the rail, about a 50cm section seems to be rotten - every 1 in 3 screws we just spinning  :(

The R/O/S is only a small area by the bog - Looks like the waters got in from either the rear handle or the rear seal that runs from left to right above the rear lights.

The F/N/S feels a little bit cold / damp, doesn't seem soft, so I guess it just needs resealing.

F/O/S has a small patch of softness, maybe 1" by 3", so I guess that’s nothing TOO major too?

Don’t really know what to do with it if I’m honest.

It’s a 1993 Swift, and condition wise it’s VERY good for its age. It doesn't smell damp inside either - hence why I never noticed it until I gave it a through going over a couple of weeks ago.

What are your initial thoughts? if any?  :-X

Could try drying it out the TheBoy way. With a can of petrol and a match. :y

My dad is a joiner by trade, and I’m good with anything DIY related, so repairing could be an option, but I guess it would be a fairly major job, and therefore not worth doing really?
     
Is there anything I can 'inject' the wood with?

sorry as to your question injecting the wood  :-? if yer do rip the board out the timber is surrounded by polystyrene you can expose the timber and slap that stuff all over it to strengthen it but what you will gain by doin it if im honest is not a great deal i would just slap some sealer all over outside thats my oppinion and just keep using it

Probably talking out of my rear end here ( as I often do) but wasn't there a resin on the market a while back that you could "Inject" into rotting timber to preserve what was left and firm it up ?

oh maybe another bit of food for thought its something ive seen in vans before its not right but sometimes i suppose it would please the eye,ive seen vans where someones boarded over the soft board to hide it,theres numerous bodges or the big serious strip down and do it right.hope these few options help :)

I wasn't a happy chappie, especially as we'd traded-in a mint 1998 one for it.

Hi Ian. Hav'nt seen your van yet but will at the Spring Yorkmeet. Mine is a 1989 (F or G reg) Elddis whirlwind GTX...sounds good! It's had some serious damp at the front before i bought it to the extent the whole 3 front windows were ripped out & refitted, not a pretty job but as you say it does'nt smell damp or musty. Galv. chassis, solid floor, heating, cooking, shower etc. £200. It'll die one day but will owe me nothing. No more tents for me!!!! :y

Still be good for spring Yorkmeet. Look at it as a learning curve, you won't be fooled again. Meantime use it as often as you can until it falls apart....get your money's worth then either do it up & keep it or ebay it near the summer as a project.   
     If not let Jeremy Clarkson & Jaimie Boy fire assorted projectiles at it.
    To sum up, if it's not worth repairing, sell it on quick of just enjoy using it as it is for as long as you can.
   Third class caravan beats 1st class tent. :y

your right there guy anything beats putting a tent up or a trailer tent .trailer tents are comfortable but a caravan is better .i am still looking for a nice caravan .we should have one before the yurk meet ? hopefully  :-/ :y

I'm sure I will get another year out of it Guy. And if it dries out, possibly longer? Who knows? I don’t know how fast they deteriorate once they start?

The floor is solid. As is 95% of the van actually...

However t'was still a bit of a bummer when I found the soft areas. I honestly dont think the seller was aware of the damp issues though. Guess its just a bit of bad luck - it does tend to follow me (Like when I bought the TD Elite on ebay and the waterpump fell to bits 100+ miles away from home! >:( >:( >:()

yes ian i have had a look and no disrespect but it a bit to old for what we are looking for ?i have not long sold a bailey senator calafornia 2002 twin axle !i use to pull it with a toyota 4.5 landcruiser .and i brought my miggy and it would not pull my van so i sold the van and the landcruiser .brought a trailer tent .it was to much like hard work putting it up and down .thanks for the offer ian :y

i use to have a bedford  caravette in 1977 it was a cracking van . i have realy fancied a motorhome but swmbo will not let me have one .she likes the caravan and its got to be the best  i think i might have spoilt her .it has to have a fixed bed outside shower everything ! bless her . ;D :y

The Motor Home I have for next year is a fixed bed type, to be fair it is my Dad's but will be at the York Met with Myself and Miss Vamps. Caravans have an advantage in many ways, either way me and tents, well long time gone I think..... :D :D

totaly agree with you vamps .we have a few caravans over the years and to be honest we have loved every bit of it .we are missing ours loke mad .we often went away in the winter months its great no one else about .we have had a christmas in our last one it was realy relaxing .we will see you at the york meet if we manage to get the right caravan?have a nice christmas and a great new year  pete ;) :) ::) :y

   I'm not a full blown caravanner going on holiday etc. but for OOF/Classic car meets it's so much easier than camping, no need to set up, you can plug everything in & you can be at home wherever you are.

thats the way to do it in my eyes buy em chep and when theyre knaffed throw em and get another,yer never lose money on em :y
