In an episode of the simpsons, someone ask the priest if is wrong for a hungry man to steal a loaf of bread. And the priest replies it is not wrong. Did our boys in blue complain about that ? OK over simplyfying it a bit but hey I bet the simpsons reach a bigger audience. |

Very interesting - and who makes them poor?
I am not commenting either way as to be honest I do not know what I would do in that circumstance |

I think he means a loaf of bread or a bit of fruit not the entire drink aisle. As before very grey - should not do it - but better that than burglary, or mugging. |

Another example of how the 'Church' has made itself largely irrelevant to many in today’s society.
A shocking illustration of simplistic and deeply flawed thinking far removed from any semblance of realism! |

Not missing the fact that this was said to a relatively small number of people (I'm guessing), was judged by someone to be erroneous (I'm guessing again) and published to a considerably larger audience. Wouldn't it have been a good idea if someone (the press?) had decided "that's wrong. We won't publish it."? Even better, if the person who got it to the Press went to the "priest" (not a Christian concept I might add!!!) instead and told him he was on very dangerous ground talking like that. An old-fashioned idea I suppose. ;D |

Perhaps so Chris but unfortunately some elements of the established religious orders have been able to dispense such flawed thinking without sanction for some considerable time. The effects of such insular thinking may well linger in the minds of those sufficiently vulnerable to accept the words as spoken - without question - to their ultimate detriment. It seems that now more than ever those who deem it necessary to have a religious element in their lives need true pastoral care not a motivational nudge from the direction of a politically motivated or reckless preacher. Taking into consideration the mess the Roman Catholic Church had found itself in lately, due mainly the secret and obfuscated way various scandals have been dealt with, I feel that such incidents should be reported as widely and as transparently as possible. |

There are sanctions and sanctions. I was proposing that a first-hand (or should it be ear?) listener who has a basic understanding of right and wrong might provide the remedial action and keep it local but dealt-with. I must say I wondered if this chap was talking to a group made up entirely of people fresh out of prison who needed to be persuaded to make a move in the right direction! |

Yep, there's merit in that approach Chris, there's no wholly right or wrong answer - like most things in life. Problems lost their potency if adequately dealt with irrespective of the means of intervention. |
