Title: New Project car Post by Simon Omega 2 on 22. Feb 2010 at 21:54
having sold my fully marked 1998 omega, its time to build a facelift one, ready for the forthcoming show season, where the club i am a member off, takes all the old police cars to raise money for help the heroes.
The club has old cars from mgb's, allegro, austin1100, volvo v70s, all sorts! Heres the vehicle i am replicating, Heres the donor car as it stands currently (spoiler coming off and leather coming out, all for sale later) |

Top ones a facelift tho? How can that be a 1998? Or am i reading wrong lol
How do you drive around with police markings and not get stopped?? |
Title: Re: New Project car Post by AmigoMV6 on 23. Feb 2010 at 21:00
I believe you can drive around with police markings provided you don't try to immitate an officer. I know you can buy & run classic panda cars.
Maybe the decals have to out of date? :-/ |

Simon,
If that was your Miggy in police uniform I saw on eBay a few months ago, did eBay remove the advert a couple of times and the third time you threaten to sue Ebay? Also, where the hell are you going to get a bonnet badge from, look at the size of it! I cannot imagine the Chief Constable have a press conference handing one over to you. D. Good Job on the last one by the way. |

Simon and I are both a member of PVEC, the Police Vehicle Enthusiast's Club, as I intend to produce a TVP saloon fairly soon.
ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers)with imput from various other clubs have formed a code of practice you could say; That modern vehicles have 'NOT IN SERVICE' displayed to the rear and O/S, all 'POLICE' wording and force crests are covered. It is technically an offence to drive a vehicle with a blue light fitted, even if it's covered or disconnected. But ACPO agreement states it's ok if it's covered and is inoperable i.e fuses removed etc. But battenburg is permitted and rear chevrons etc uncovered. But of course these aren't run about cars, you now have to fill in a log book when you take the vehicles on road for battery charging, MOT, servicing and going to and from shows. |

As I understand it:- All strobes etc have to be disabled (not just pulling fuse, wig wag drivers have to be disconnected) no force logo or police wording to be visible (I think you were allowed to cover it up at one time but the rules now mean that you have to remove them totally). I know James Waddington's estate has magnetic logos and police wording which is just placed on the car when it's at a show. |
Title: Re: New Project car Post by Simon Omega 2 on 24. Feb 2010 at 18:41
I have elites and Mv6s, using a spare saloon isnt a problem lol.
I sold mine on ebay at xmas and no it was not removed and yes it sold on ebay as it was legal. Dont worry about the legal side of the car as it gets disguised and legalised for use on the road, but will be in full livery and on show stands and exhibition displays once i have restored it. And yes, i do have permission for the car, and abide by what josh said, we have never had a problem. Infact it aided road safety, when 5 of us where in convoy up the M5 going to worcester HQ (by invitation), and NOT 1 CAR would pass our convoy, despite "NOT IN SERVICE" people still werent sure, but then, if a 1998 S reg omega, a 1994 L reg Escort, a 1998 Astra, and a 1991 Senator, look like they are still in service then people arent the sharpest tools in the box. Some times for local shows they send a bike to take you there to save hours of covering up. but thats all by the by. the point is, the car is coming in standard, and will be returned to spec shortly, which will be interesting little project! |
Title: Re: New Project car Post by Simon Omega 2 on 24. Feb 2010 at 18:41
and, this car lives under lock and key in the warm when not at a show!
|
Title: Re: New Project car Post by joshwyatt on 24. Feb 2010 at 18:46
Certainly is interesting Simon, I intend on producing a marked TVP Omega saloon in the next 2 months or so...so would definitely welcome any imput you have or experiences :y

Title: Re: New Project car Post by Simon Omega 2 on 24. Feb 2010 at 21:48
well if you do it before saturday you will have beaten me lol.
Mine is TVP battenburg, there is an older jam sandwich one on pcuk, M... KNP, but, the early facelifts had orange stripe. try one of them then complete with my roadwars omega and vectra (my mate now owns) will have the full SKY ONE compliment! |
Title: Re: New Project car Post by tunnie on 24. Feb 2010 at 23:39 oceansoul wrote on 23. Feb 2010 at 20:43:
They are both facelifts, his previous project a 1998 has already been sold. Fine to drive around with battern berg design as long as it does not show the police crest, and have word police covered. |
Title: Re: New Project car Post by Simon Omega 2 on 25. Feb 2010 at 00:45
cant drive battenburg as the blue gives off blue light all thought its a reflection.
unless solid blue not reflective tho |

When I worked Breakdown and Recovery in Hampshire my Astra Van had Red Diamond Bright Chevrons on the rear, Orange stripes down the sides between 2 thinner (1") Blue Diamond Bright strips, a large crest, "Police Approved Operator" stickers (as well as Green Flag, AA and RAC) as well as the garage name/number and roof Lights... People always slowed down/moved over at night ::) ::) |

Title: Re: New Project car Post by pedroMV6 on 28. Feb 2010 at 10:47
My mate has a Plod Omega, IIRC he found out that blue lights on a car are OK (check out how many trucks are lit up like a fairground with blue lights) as long as they do not have the capability to flash.
Saying that, blue sidelights are an MOT fail as they have to be white. |
Title: Re: New Project car Post by v6fletch on 01. Mar 2010 at 20:45
my mrs borrowed my car the other week to take the kids to scunny, on the way there she was baffled as to why everybody on the motorway etc kept moving out of her way, she wasnt speeding just plodding along.but everybody cleared the way for her, it wasnt until she parked up outside her mums house an took a walk round the front of the car an the penny dropped, ive got a pair of blue led sidelights fitted. not flashers just bright an make the car highly visible.my mrs wasnt chuffed .
ive checked with the vosa at the mot station and they say provided they dont flash they are legal , but sidelights must be white to pass the mot so i shall be fitting them behind the grill !!! ive had knebhods run in to me in the past an its the usual "didnt see you " now im seen !!!! ps would love to see the police replicas at one of the shows, can u send info as to where they can be seen pls? |
Title: Re: New Project car Post by Simon Omega 2 on 01. Mar 2010 at 23:55
yeah sure, but, vosa are wrong, blue lights are not legal. and people wont move just cos a solid blue light is on.
generaly, in lane 3 in a black or white omega people move, no idea why but with xenons on they do. |

That looks great, cant wait to see it when its all done. Btw how did you get the engine bay That clean (products used) Mine could do with a good clean :)
|
Title: Re: New Project car Post by Simon Omega 2 on 06. Mar 2010 at 12:08
Further Detailing of engine bay
New Track Rod Ends, sod of a job, but a pair to pass an mot, and nothing else, quite a result. Retail at £48 a unit (or 100 ish main dealer) got them trade for £6.12 each thats a bargain! The MV6 Wheels are now off, and are for sale on ebay, have not posted them on here as dont have enough posts, 2 had inner edge wear on tyres (proven fault with ball joints!) pm me if interested in the wheels. Police control unit for equipment being installed. Thats it for now, more updates later in the week, although i have now wired in the siren and alternate headlights which was amusing. Note, this car isnt in use on the road anylonger so dont give the usual about legality lol |
Title: Re: New Project car Post by Simon Omega 2 on 09. Mar 2010 at 22:36

|
Title: Re: New Project car Post by Simon Omega 2 on 09. Mar 2010 at 22:54

|
Title: Re: New Project car Post by Simon Omega 2 on 17. Mar 2010 at 12:48
Well, so far today, i have got the wheels wrapped and packed ready for courier to collect, ripped the leather interior out of the car and got that ready for someone who is coming to collect it, and i have also re fitted an original police interior into it.
Not bad for 2 1/2 hours work. i think i will put the kettle on and then hunt round for the biscuits that got hidden when rumour broke loose i was on a diet for a few weeks! |

Simon, are you able to get hold of any other sun visor mounted tracker units? I'd like to put one in VTL and start the ball rolling on that. I'll put a post on PVEC, but thought you'd be the best guy to ask first :y

Title: Re: New Project car Post by Simon Omega 2 on 18. Mar 2010 at 01:13

Title: Re: New Project car Post by Simon Omega 2 on 26. Mar 2010 at 01:51
