Title: Nostalgia - ain't what it used to be
Post by Entwood on 16. Mar 2010 at 00:19
Well we've had "Trains nostalgia"

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1268208405

We've had "Ships nostalgia"

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1268260490

We've even had "Buses nostalgia"

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1268424850

So I'm going to start "Aviation nostalgia"

First aircraft I flew ... 1970 Vickers Varsity RAF Topcliffe

looked similar to this ..

www.airliners.net/aviation-photos/middle/7/0/1/1419107.jpg" name="post_img_resize_1" alt="" border="0" id="imagecount1" style="display:none" />

and as a budding Air Engineer I spent alot of time with my head inside this ... Bristol Hercules radial engine

then ended up flying another Hercules ... The Lockeed C130 Hercules...   for about 25 years !!!

Nope .. never was ...   Air Engineer my trade .. sat behind the pilots and kept them honest, looked after all the "systems" that the "Drivers, Airframe" did not understand ..  :)

(Civvie version of Air Engineer was "Flight Engineer" for some reason . :)  )

First flight for me: Schleicher Ka-2 8-)

First flight was off the winch and the cable broke. All the sh*te from the floor flew up into my face during the slightly over-enthusiastic lowering of the nose that ensued. Didn't put me off though.

I met Vulcan XH558 in a previous life around 1991 when flying one of these, about 2 weeks before it was grounded. Waggled my wings and got the same in response. :D

Pretty poor performing glider as I recall but it did spin really well. ;D

I've done 2 pleasure flights to have a go and loved it.I flew a Cessna for an hour and a Pup IIRC. Brilliant and I would recommend it to anyone, especially as I had to land it too with no previous experience...laugh?Only when I found grass on the tail!  ;DA bit too enthusiastic on the pulling back on the stick :o :o

Ahh, 778. the Lasham Aerobatics slag. ;D Nearly lost my breakfast many times in her. ;D

Guess it's about time I dragged G-EELT out of her trailer.

Mmmm .. all these aircraft with less than the optimum number of engines .. including some with none at all !!!  Not good ..  :)

Some of the more "interesting" things I did ....

Most of the really interesting stuff I was a tad too busy to take photographs !!

My first flight was in one of these

1970s Parka, I remember it well, 1974, a very windy day on Rhyl prom. I clutched both lower corners of the parka and turned and ran into the wind, must have made a good 8ft distance which wasn't bad for my first flight ;D

I would imagine there are a few OOfers that may have done this as a child  :y

WOW!

that takes me back. Used to fly a "boatian" and a "blanik" and eventually a "T21" all two seaters, taking up "first timers" who mostly blew chunks into a bag during the flight.

Good times!!

My 1st solo flight was in my Sylvia turbo over a hump back bridge,  dont think I broke any records, but gladly didn't break the car either.   ::)

my first flight was a memorable one...

Was doing my school work experience up the road at British Aerospace in Broughton, with about 10 others...

By an amazing coincidence, my sister happened to be doing private clarinet tuition for a few people at the time...one of whom was the aerospace test pilot.

So a few days later my name is called out on the tannoy, the sectretary the whole work floor fancied came out to get me, and offered me a test flight.

So off I went, and sat in the cockpit of an executive jet for its 1st ever flight, Chester to Bristol and back, flying over my house on the way back!

An amazing experience, and an unforgettable 1st ever flight.

Did lots of flights in Chipmunks at Cambridge... Also got to go on the "Weather Flight" from RAF Cranwell when on camp, in a Tuccano, the basic Jet Trainer... What an experience!

Done about 38 hours in a Cessna but had to "postpone" the completion of my PPL :'( :'(

Also had a fair bit of time in Gliders... Including solo ridge soaring in Scotland :y :y

Yeah.........had to postpone mine, too! (small motorcycle accident resulting in 2.5 yrs in hospital...........!)

Funnily enough, its a bit expensive now to take up again!!

I wouldn't have minded so much if it was for a better reason...

I left my ex-wife and moved some 150 miles away and travelling to the flying club wasn't very practical ::) ::)

Also, being between jobs at the time, I needed the cash that was in the Flying Account to live on :( :(

Still.... Happier now than I ever was so it was worth it :y :y

Even if I was only 10 hours short of completing it
