Title: fitting LPG to V6? Post by UrbanFox on 27. Mar 2010 at 17:50
Hi,
I am considering getting a V6 Omega Estate. I'd prefer to buy one with LPG already fitted, but they are light on the ground. Is it a huge task to fit it yourself (if you're mechanically skilled)? Thanks |

see my completion thread for an idea of the work involved in rear end kit fitting

Finding space under bonnet is the hardest part on the V6, particularly those with 2.5/3.0l engines and cruise control.

There is space under the bonnet but, as TB says, it is tight :y
Biggest problem with the estates is tank size (assuming you want a spare wheel tank) and therefore range :( Have a look here for some pictures http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1219174789 |

I do mainly town driving, but yes, I'd want a spare wheel tank as the estate needs to be able to be used...
I'll check the threads. :) Hmmm, maybe the V6 is a bad idea then? |

pictures didnt work in your thread LD :(
Nice work on Tunnie's car though! I'd get a 2.2, but I hear they have issues? |

Perhaps maybe a Vectra V6 is going to be easier to do?
I'd continue to use my Omega TD, but its only doing 25ish round town, and is costing me a fair amount to run :( Plus its on 152k miles now and even though it just passed an mot, its time to move on i think! |

Mines on 137k and never missed a beat! Father T's has 2.2 on 109k, going strong. Quote:
Errr no! |

Is the Vectra harder because of its engine layout?
Just seen the price of 2.2's - quite expensive compared to the V6's....... Dont want to spend a fortune on what is going to be a work horse! |

Vectra bay is even tighter than Omega, the V6 only just fits in, its a struggle on the Omega, so would advise against it. Also Omega is way better than Vectra ;)

I agree having owned 2 Omega's that the it is the better car (well, better than the Vec-B's, but the Vec C 3.2 that I have is on a par with the omega's ive had, if not shading them a little bit), and would prefer an Omega thats for sure.
Just wish I hadnt ummed and arrred over the 2 LPG converted ones that were on Auto Trader last week and the week before!! |

Why don't you get it chipped, it improves economy and performance :y If an Auto though gearbox will need to be changed. |

Title: Re: fitting LPG to V6? Post by UrbanFox on 28. Mar 2010 at 14:25
tbf, I really need an estate, and my TD is a saloon.
I dont want to replace the gearbox lol. |

Title: Re: fitting LPG to V6? Post by UrbanFox on 28. Mar 2010 at 14:41
Its an auto sadly.
I'd get a TD estate, but again the running costs are too high :( |

running costs would still be too high.... i need something that does at least 30mpg round town..

How do you figure that out!? LPG you need to think pence per mile, but as rough calculation on mpg, a V6 can do 20mpg on gas around town, with LPG less than half price of petrol at some stations, you basically get 40mpg! |

Exactly, which is why I am ruling out the diesel option. Did you think I was saying that LPG wouldnt do what I want? |

I was going on his example of 20mpg on petrol. I would suggest somewhere in region of 10-15% less mpg on gas |
|
Title: Re: fitting LPG to V6? Post by Lazydocker on 29. Mar 2010 at 11:47
Let's put a different slant on this... MPG is a useless figure for comparison. LPG has a different calorific value to petrol for a start!
Bin the obsession with MPG, the best comparison figure is pence per mile/miles per pound :y on petrol, mine costs an average of 25ppm, on LPG it's 15ppm, so a saving of 10ppm. This is an average over the combined cycle :y Ask Entwood for his figures... He's been very "Anoraky" over it and has a spreadsheet which gives accurate figures :y |

I have most of an LPG kit you could buy off me for £100.
you will need a tank and three replacement injectors. other stuff is all there, including the manifold |
