it may sound daft to you guys but could somebody please tell me what kind of engine oil should i run my miggy on? ive always had deisel motors so i thought id better get the right kind for the miggy. thanks folks [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Why Semi and not fully, out of interest?

Not asking to be an argumentative SOB, honest ;) it's just that I always twitch when I hear 'semi synth' and I wonder why not spend a little extra for fully synth..

Not asking to be an argumentative SOB, honest ;) it's just that I always twitch when I hear 'semi synth' and I wonder why not spend a little extra for fully synth..

Primary reason for full synth is slightly longer life.

Personally, I'd rather change i little more often, and no point using a more expensive oil.  Regular oil changes with a semi synth is far kinder to the engine than less regular changes with a longer life oil.

Depending on the turbo, still valid.  For a diesel, definately. For a high performance petrol turbo, I'd probably change the priorities on life/performance/properties.

Indeed - the MR2 gets fully synth from Opie, changed every 6k and/or after an extended session on track .. but it sees a hard life given it's putting out anywhere between 50 and 100% more power than standard (depending on how far the red mist descendswick gets turned up) with an oil-cooled plain bearing turbo :)

Anyway, I digress - can't argue with the price of the GM oil on the trade club, for sure.

That's definitely what I'll put in the Omega soon - not sure I can get away with it in the MR2, but I'll give it a try once I fix the oil pressure & temperature gauges :)

Yep, the 5w30 is indeed the recommendation for the later Omegas on 20k service schedules (although I'd never let any car run that long on any oil) ;D.

more like double that! It's about £31 retail for 10/40, 5/30 is more expensive

Yep, I nearly bought some from a dealer that didn't do trade club once. When they told me the price of just 5L of the 5w30 I made a swift about turn and beat a hasty retreat. :o

On trade club it does take some beating, though.

Thought as much, just remembered a previous post from some time ago.

Agree that I wouldn't let a car run 20k miles between oil changes.  As I only do 5-6k miles a year it gets done annually irrespective.

I should say, of course, no problem running these engines on the 10w40 either as long as oil change intervals are appropriate.

I dont like to leave mine in that long - as soon as it starts to darken, time to change :)
