Title: Auto gearbox on the blink
Post by berserkerboy on 11. Nov 2010 at 22:30
I have a 2.0 16v X reg auto that has started to give me problems. Whilst driving the car it will sometimes give a little burp, the engine management light will momentarily light and the automatic gearbox will go on strike: The warning 'Automatic gearbox' comes up on the dash and I have to manually change gear. If I stop the car, turn the ignition off and then restart, the automatic gearbox will work as normal again.
Anybody got any ideas as to what is going wrong?
Thanks in advance.

the fact that your engine management light flicks on first before the gearbox fault may point to a faulty crank or cam sensor as the auto box needs an engine speed signal to function correctly

sounds like something is throwing gearbox into limp mode, usually its something else (not the gearbox) which causes this. Cam sensor is a favourite on the 4 pots.

Check fault codes with paper clip test and also check the ATF level

Thanks for the suggestions. Will do the paperclip test tomorrow. How do I check the ATF level?

Engine running, car on a level surface, remove the filler plug (driver side towards front of the box)

The ATF Level should be level with the fill plug, if you can't see the level, might be worth getting some and see how much it needs filling up  :y

I've used this and so have many others:

Not sure if we still get a discount?  :-/

many threads on this - I  fancy the  crank sensor but most money is on the ATF and filter change. Do not be surprised if after changing the ATF it does it again.

I changed both and fingers crossed all ok. Omegas are unpredictable.

Am getting some funny readings for the paperclip test. Is this because the car is dual fuel or am I doing something wrong? As far as i could determine the car  produces 4 digit fault codes as it immediately started to flash the following sequence:
10, 3, 3, 5, 1, 6, 9, 10, 10, 2, 10, 1, 10, 2, 10, 2, 10, 2, 10, 3, 10, 2, 10, 4, 10, 3,,,and at this point I gave up! :-/
Also, is there a list of fault codes for the 2.0 16v?

Okay, I guess that 10 is a zero so that the codes that appear to matter are 0335, 1690, 0201, 0202, 0203,0204.
0335 is incorrect rpm signal. Am I right in thinking this is the crankshaft sensor?
The other codes are voltage high. Anybody any ideas as to what might be causing this?
Cheers

0335 is crank sensor
020# fuel injection circuit open on that cylinder
1690 possibly auto box related

Double check the numbers, but I would say change the crank sensor and the rest should sort itself out. Very unusual to see crank sensor on the 4pot though...?  :-/

Maybe video the flashes on a mobile first, makes it easier to count as you can re winde etc...
Important to get the full story though, so another paperclip test to confirm :y

Good idea. Thank you. Does anybody know the best place to get the genuine VX sensor and the procedure for removal. I don't know what I am looking for.
Thanks once again.
