Auxillary Belt snapped is my guess.

id say its the fan belt snapped, or pulley given up, seeing as it drives the waterpump and alternator

Agreed on this, no drive to alternator, or waterpump points to auxillary belt fubard.   :(

You must have carried on driving for some time to have flattened the battery.
Hopefully the cold weather will have prevented too much damage(!).

No mention of flat battery until after the event;

Overheating:  The temperature will rise instantly, as there is no coolant pumping around the engine.

Also, driving for a fair distance is not easy when you have no power steering, and on an Omega, power steering is mandatory lol  :y

If the auxiliary/fan belt snapped, then the first thing you should have noticed is the red charge light coming on, then as you turned off to check, you'd have noticed that you'd lost all assistance of your steering. It would've taken a mile or two on driving for the engine to overheat. As for the battery now being flat, I've no idea. I agree with Brickhead but was trying to be diplomatic  ;)

I can say all this cos all the above happened in that order to me a few weeks ago when my fan belt snapped.  ;) My battery had enough charge to restart my car 3 times as I started it to coast down a long hill on my way home and then start it to drive it up the ramp of the recovery truck.  :y :y

Send a PM to AndyC, he is a Vauxhall parts manager and will supply the belt at Trade Card prices for OOF members.

You need to investigate why the belt went as well because it will just throw the new belt if the cause isn't rectified! Is the tensioner siezed? Water pump?

You just want the tensioner wheel with the bearing.  Undo nut in centre (15mm), remove old, fit new and retighten nut  :y  2 minutes!!  Refit belt as per diagram above.

one other question i have a front wheel hub to replace also and have read some silly torque figures for tightening it! over 300nm would i just get away with tight as i can on a 3' bit of scaffhold?

If it really does have to be that tight, use a trolley jack to raise the 3ft Scaff Bar on a very good ratchet and socket, then lower/raise/lower/raise etc until you have reached the desired torque.  :y

Post by Aundie on 08. Dec 2010 at 19:59
thing is cant find a torque wrench that goes that high!

Title: Re: breakdown!

Do the work then ask your local garage to torque it up for you.

A  paperclip test should reveal all:

as kneepad suggests.
code number will further illuminate matters without confusing the issue with engine noises.
