if a 3 litre v6 jumps a couple of teeth om the cam belt whats the chances of valve damage?.its ronning as rough as hell and weve checked every sensor and the coil pack and plugs and leads and everythings working as it should.and te belt jumping is all that it can be and it sounds tappy from the top end

if you know its definately jumped a couple of teeth, have you tried to refit?

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by The Red Baron on 16. Jan 2011 at 14:10

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by sierrapaul on 16. Jan 2011 at 14:11
havent had the covers off it yet.as weve tryed everything else this is the only thing i can think of.its saying cam sensor voltage to high.and my thinking is as its a new cam sensor and its running the belt jumpping is all i can think off cos we tried the cam sensor on my v6 calibra and that ran fine

does it tick over very rough/wants to stall.
will it rev over 2k & sound ok? |
|
Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by sierrapaul on 16. Jan 2011 at 14:20
it ticks over and sounds like a bag of nuts n bolts it will rev but very hesitantly as soon as you put it in reverse or drive and touch the throtle it dies but will move back and forwards if you dont touch the gas

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by The Red Baron on 16. Jan 2011 at 14:29
is it popping from the air intake plenum on tickover?
|
|
Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by sierrapaul on 16. Jan 2011 at 14:37
no only when you rev it on tick over it sounds like its running on 2 cylinders

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by The Red Baron on 16. Jan 2011 at 14:44
take the EGR valve off, give it a good clean inside with carb cleaner, or you could just make a blanking plate up at its base. x2 torx bolts. this may sort you out. :y

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by sierrapaul on 16. Jan 2011 at 14:47
blanked the egr valve when first got it as it was leaking

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by The Red Baron on 16. Jan 2011 at 15:01
mmmmm
have you had owt to bits on the inlet/plenum. check all vac connections are tight. other than that, yes check the situation of the cambelt. if valves were hitting pistons then you would have a loud knocking not a tappy sound. i did manage to save a 3.0l that went a few teeth out. :y |

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by sierrapaul on 16. Jan 2011 at 15:09

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by Andy H on 16. Jan 2011 at 15:24 sierrapaul wrote on 16. Jan 2011 at 13:59:
I think the consensus is that the belt has to skip 3 teeth before valves meet pistons (but don't quote me.....). Both the Omegas I have owned have sounded a little tappety when cold so may be nothing to worry about (unless some valves are bent and have big clearances as a result). First step has to be to take the bagpipes, auxiliary belt and cambelt cover off. Wind the engine round to TDC and check that the timing marks on the cam pulleys are aligned with the marks on the rear cambelt cover. |

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by ffcgary1 on 16. Jan 2011 at 15:33
It is poss to bend the valves at 2 teeth belt jump and it also depends on what engine speed it jumped at, so yes you may have top end damage. :(

thought it was 3. also dependant on which way & what cam. |

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by chrisgixer on 16. Jan 2011 at 16:45
What's the belt history? When is it due?
Not too bad a job to check the timing marks. Could post a video with audio....? |

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by Richgm on 16. Jan 2011 at 18:01
Have you done the paper clip test to look for any fault codes?

Yes, if the top end has been rattling as a result the prognosis isn't good, I'm afraid. Kevin |

Generally, you get away with 2, but not 3 :(

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by 2woody on 17. Jan 2011 at 18:25
returning to the OP, have you made sure that the cam sensor plug is actually connected to the cam sensor itself ?
"voltage too high" is signifying that the ecu is receiving maybe 12V when it's expecting 5V, which could be because it's plugged into the wrong place. Look at the wires and compare to the colours in the wiring diagram. |

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by duaneyb1 on 17. Jan 2011 at 18:49
the omega is in a garage and all sensors have been checked and are fine. the timing belt has jumped 3 teeth the bloke at the garage is a family friend. he is gona time the old belt backup an check the compression and if valves are bent then i will have to break my baby due to the cost of putting it right which will be a great shame as the car is in extremely good condition and b4 this happend drove like a dream :( :'(

If valves are bent, just replace the heads complete with second hand parts. There's always cars being broken here, & I'm sure it wouldn't be that expensive to put right. |

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by duaneyb1 on 18. Jan 2011 at 17:20
hello all just an update on my v6 it has been timed back up and the compression has been checked on each cylinder and to shock you all no valves have been bent :o so it has had a new belt and a new water pump (apparently some bearings from the water pump are what caused the belt to jump) and is running as sweet as a nut :y a big thanks to sierrapaul(my brother in law) and a big thanks to all of you here at OOF that helped :y (ps when a belt jumps 3 teeth all hope is not lost)

If your garage genuinely believes that a failed water pump bearing has caused the cam belt to jump then he doesn't know what he's doing. You should change your garage. Or If your garage is trying to get you to believe that a failed water pump bearing has caused your cam belt to fail, he's conning you. You should change your garage. |

I know it has reputedly happened here, but it's very very unlikely, that's one of the reasons for fitting a cam belt cover. My fan belt shredded itself recently and ended up no where near the cam belt. Infact how many places are there where anything could get through to the cam belt? |
|
Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by duaneyb1 on 18. Jan 2011 at 17:42
all i know is the car is running cooler and my heater is working again so the water pump was knackered

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by jonathanh on 19. Jan 2011 at 08:09
yes but the point is on the V6 the cambelt does not drive the water pump. what people are trying to say is that although the garage has apparently fixed the problem, what they are telling you is plainly wrong. If they are prepared to tell you a bunch of lies about the problem, have they done the work correctly.

You know.. reading the first post from duaneyb1 on this page, it sounds like it was his brother who did the work.. so you're all telling him to find a new brother ;)

Title: Re: v6 cam belt Post by sierrapaul on 19. Jan 2011 at 10:50
the waterpump bearing broke up and caused the belt to jump.the waterpump caseing had a hole in it and the rollers came out the pump.and as you know or should know the waterpump sits behind the cam cover and only the pully sits on the outside of the cover.so it is poss and the garage is very good and not rip offs
