You know, I'd be miserable making over £1m in profit an hour

I doubt that the majority of that comes from filling station forecourts tbh. It is quite a diverse company.
Lets hope a nice big wedge of it will be going into the coffers of HM treasury = deficit reduction. ;)
I do hope we (as a country) are not slowly reverting to the old 70,s lefty mindset, when profit was a dirty word. ::)

Shell makes the vast bulk of its profits on the “upstream” side of the business — producing oil and gas — rather than the “downstream” refining and petrol sales. The company usually claims to be making very little out of pump sales pointing out that around 70% of the price is made up of government duties.

That snippet from the Guardian article may well help many understand just how a concern like Shell can make this level of profit - from my perspective it does not help me understand why I had to pay £550 yesterday for the 1000 litres of heating oil I topped up my tank with.

Incidentally while on a trip last week into the dark lands of a certain county I caught sight of a sign outside a small service station announcing that the unleaded fuel they were selling was 1.99 per litre. :-?

That which is "upstream" soon becomes "downstream", surely? Who are they trying to fool? ;D
