after checking basics got car started after giving starter gentle tap. Now suspect either bad connection at starter or starter u/s. Its covered in oil probably from cam cover leak. Any other views?

Wouldn't help being covered in oil, try cleaning the connections, especialy the earth.

But generally a sticking starter means that the solenoid is on it's way out :'(

Could go forever now and never miss a beat... May stick frequently, may only last one more start... Unfortunately there is no easy answer other than refurbishing/replacing :(

found that battery was very low in charge. have recharged battery and all seems ok for now but need to check charge rate etc. this will have to wait for weekend though. Thanks for replies.
