Title: 2.5 TD Auto Boots down and poor acceleration Post by dmbeale on 08. Feb 2011 at 21:53
Hi all.
I have a 2000 Facelift model 2.5 TD X25DT Automatic with 121k. The car runs ok poodling round town but has slow acceleration especially when climbing up hill. The auto box always boots down with a big black puff of smoke when trying to gently accelerate. Does this point to a poss EGR prob or air leak somewhere. MPG is also terrible at 20-25 (or is this just normal for this car !!!). Poor starter when warmed up and I need to allow the glow plug light to go out twice before trying to start when cold. Any help gratefully received. Are there any books/workshop manuals out there for this engine.?? Cheers Dave |

Around town 20-25 sounds about wright.
Change air oil+oil filter and fuel filter buy some forte diesel treatment pour the full bottle in the fuel filter before re-fitting,start engine and rev to around 1000rpm(5 mins) then gave it an italian tune up.hold second put foot to the floor and red line it this will clean the carbon out :y |

Old bmw diesels used in migs are not what you would call economical engines.
They are pretty reliable if they were serviced (often oil changes) but economy is pretty bad compared to VW or audi etc. Your engine does sound like it is pretty choked. Try what hoofing it suggested, aslo I would find a step hill and redline it going up. Also you could always take it to the garage that does specialised utrasonic cleaning of the engines |

I would replace air filter & fuel filter unless you know they are ok. Otherwise check thin tube that goes from underneath of the middle of the inlet manifold to the charge pressure sensor (looks like a 1" cube) mounted on passenger side of engine compartment. This tends to fill with oil and cause poor acceleration.

Get's my vote. Hot starting is also a common problem. Worn pump. |

Ditto.. Make sure that this: Is attached to this: And that the tube is unobstructed and not split anywhere along it's length. Also make sure that the EGR valve (below) is attached to a two or three port solenoid in the same area on the nearside suspension turret (number of ports depends on age of car): Worth popping the rubber hose off the front of the engine and making sure the EGR valve itself isn't stuck open, too. |
