Hi guy's, i seem to keep having problems with the temperature gauge on my 2.0. It usually doesn't react for the first 5 or so minutes after startup (usual in order to reach operating temp) but then it shoots to the centre of the dial (90 degrees?) quickly like it has just got a sudden reading. It then stays for 1 to 2 minutes then the reading drops off as suddenly as it first came on.

Is this common?
Is there a specific part responsible?

Obviously i don't want to drive it forever with no temp reading the majority of the time as i may not know until it's too late if it decides to overheat one day.

I am no expert on Omegas (far from it) but the temp gauge needle on my Omega CDX should reside at a 45 degree angle from the horizontal. If its at 90 degrees from the horizontal that's at the top of the gauge in the red ? Has the 2.0 version got a different layout ?

Back of the engine, there`s a casting that the EGR is bolted to (and dispack if not DBW)  Single wire push connector controls actual gauge, connector adjacent sends temp info to engine ECU

Sounds like the connection is intermittent, and wouold benefit from a clean-up, pinch-up sort of thing.

Access is the only difficulty.  ::)

On a non-V6 engine it should be a doddle to get to and pinch / clean up the spade connector :D :D ;) ;)

I don't know if you've tried it on a 2.0 Lizzie, but I would guess not.  :-?

It may be worse on a V6, but it is not a doddle at all on the 2.0;  2.2 would be easier due to absence of DIS.

either that or go and buy a plasma temp gauge kit and fit that until you get time to trace the problem. A friend of mine has got the same problem but has put a plasma guage in for now until he can get time to sort it out, works fine.

I must admit you are right on that, although I have worked on other 2ltr cars ;) ;)

I thought, wrongly as it appears, that far less would be in the way to get to the spade connector than on a V6 ;) ;)

When you say that this unit is at the back of the engine block, i take it you mean that it is under the shroud below the windscreen. I cannot however spot what i am looking for at present so does anyone know where exactly i should be looking. Also are there any special tools needed to get to it and/or remove it if necessary. I thank all who have replied so far as well as anyone who replies forthwith.

Under the windscreen scuttle. If you follow your HT leads back to the Dis, then the connections are between the dispack & EGR
