Title: Front Wheel Bearing
Post by Entwood on 24. Mar 2011 at 15:37
"Drone" from the front is getting progressively worse, especially at around 30-50 mph. If I turn the steering sharply right the noise stops.

So I've jacked it up just now. No play at all in either hub, (as Chris proved at the meet), but if I spin the drivers side wheel there is a definite "rumble" that is not present on the passenger side, so I'm guessing the drivers side wheel bearing is on its way out....  :(

As I'll be doing nearly 2000 miles at the end of next month methinks it needs sorting sooner than later.

Had a read of the "how-to" and it "seems" OK .. but the pictures and words at "reply #2" are missing .... am I missing anything important ???

Best place for relevant parts ??? or is a Vx only part ??

Lastly ... do "Tool Hire" places normally hire out torque wrenches ? Mine is nowhere near 320 NM !!!!

Front wheel bearing kit is CDK603 £26.50 + vat & delivery when I got them last year

Don`t think they`re listed on website. Phone number for mail order is 0115 9835280 :y

As for the torque wrench no idea but i know when it came to undoing it in the first place it took me and Elite Petes long pole some serious bending to get it off :y

Give `em a ring and quote "CDK603"
Doddle to do Nige. Less force needed to undo than to tighten. :y

You ascertained for sure which side is duff yet Entwood?  The drone should be more pronounced when the suspension on the duff side is loaded.  So left hand bend loads the right side of the car and vice versa....   :y

Title: Re: Front Wheel Bearing
Post by hotel21 on 24. Mar 2011 at 16:36
Just re-read your initial post.  You turn sharp right and the drone stops.  That would tend to indicate that the right side is duff as when turning right the right side suspension is unloaded and the left loaded.  :y

As Rob says Nige give them a ring its NOT listed on their site but they have good stock of them mine arrived the following day.

Really isn't that bad to do but someone had tightened mine up well past 320Nm (probably in an attempt to stop it droneing rather than replace it).

A tightening option is to tighten the nut to the highest setting on your torque wrench, then nip it up a bit more and then check for play, tighten until the play goes away  :y

Is the CDK603 "just" the bearing or the bearing in the hub ???

I don't have the facilities to press in a bearing so will buy the hub unit.

Wondering what the one they list at £49.60 is if its not Contitech .. :)

Thanks for that .. and I've found a tool hire place in Swindon that does a torque wrench to 400 NM, so just need to get a decent 32 mm socket and a gurt big breaker bar ... :)

I'll phone Buypartsby in the morning .. :)

Your help appreciated ... just hope I don't end up breaking something (ie my back !!)

:)

Well I haven't got a 32mm so if I'm buying one I might as well get an impact one ..  :) and its "only" just under £9 .. then  £35 for the bar .. still .. you can never have too many tools ... :)

My thoughts are simple .. even buying/hiring the tools and parts the bill will be less than £100 ... doubt a garage would do the job for less ... and I'll know its been done correctly .. :)

Is it worth doing both? Just a thought but if one's on its' way... :-/

Also an ideal opportunity to check the front brakes over, given the mileage you're likely to be doing over the summer.

'Tis a thought ... :) Brakes would be checked  anyway as it was getting a full check before easter anyway. Did the Oil & Filter today as I had the jack out .. :)

Did my pass side last week, I had trouble taking out the play, 2 ft breaker, with 3 ft bar and me swinging on the end, still a fraction of play. Couldn't do any more so had to throw it back together, including fitting the hub centre cap.(might be worth getting a new one of these, they can be stubborn and not reseal when refitted)

I have been able to take the play out with these tools before, but not this time  :-?

Right ..

Extra tools ... ordered :)
CDK603 .....  ordered  :)
Torque wrench hire .... arranged  :)

How to ....  printed and read .. :)

Which leads to the next question ... "how to" says "hub carrier" bolts are angle tightened ... which I was always taught means don't reuse as stretched ... anyone any part numbers for replacement bolts so I can drop into dealers and pick em up ... I'm guessing 2 per unit ??

:)

well I tried to read the part numbers on both pictures ... and got nothing sensible .... !!

Still don't see either ending in a 6 ...  top one looks more like an 8 .. bottom one more like a 5 !!!

Many thanks ... but that says "caliper bolts" .. those are the small ones I believe ... I was after the part number for the larger ones .. that go to 95NM then 30 then 15 .. :)

Sorry to be a pain .. must reinstall EPC at some point !!

Caliper bolts are 90541295. T`other ones secure the caliper mounting to the hub (that`s what you`re after innit Nige?)

Totally confused now .. :(  Reinstalled EPC and got nowhere .. :(

How to thread,     http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1175890350

"Reply #4" .... says "Hub Carrier Bolts 95 Nm then 30 then 15" ....

as well as "caliper bolts 30Nm" ... now the latter ones are the ones you get with new new pads ... not a problem 90541295 ....

there are also .. on EPC ... "CALIPER TO STEERING KNUCKLE  90541296"

but nowhere can I find "Hub Carrier" as the script mentions !!!!

My problem is, once I get this in bits, I'll have no transport to get to the stealers ... so I'm trying to get all the bits in advance .. :)

OK .. with any luck  .. the last question .......  :)

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1175890350

Pictures (and words) at "reply #2" missing .. and I'm guessing they are the actual removal of the hub ...  does this need a "hub puller" or can the hub be "knocked off" from the rear ??? The "book of lies" has it being pulled off by fingers !!! after being torqued to 320 NM ?? I don't think so somehow !!  (Ch 10 section 9 para 6 )

:)

You dont need to replace the bolts, yes they are angle torqued but not nearly to the point of yield.
