In the process of changing the fromt wheel bearing. Old hub has come off, but needed some persuasion... it has left the complete inner face of the old bearing on the stub axle and i can't shift it.

No access to heat.... it has bent my, admittedly flimsy, bearing puller ... :(

I'll try and get a photo shortly .. but ideas gratefuly accepted .. :(

I've never done one so can't picture exactly what you mean, but can you get a grinder in to go so far through the inner Then tw@ gentley persuade it with a hammer & chisel/punch to break/split it?

Thats an idea .. but I'll have to go and buy a small grinder.. Don't think I'll get the 5" blade in there !!

You able to get an angled prybar in there?  Toe of the bar under the bearing casing, heel of the bar on the hub?  Gentle systematic leverage around the perifary *may* just get it moving.

Have also used the small propane paint stripper type flames then a freeze spray to try temperature shocking it with expansion/contractions.

Lots of plus gas as well maybe?

Stilsons just slide off the surface .. pry bar doesn't shift it, claw hammer won't go in because of the hub hitting the handle. Only heat I have is an electric paint stripper gun .... going to try that but don't hold much hope. SWTSMBO will be  home in an hour with her motor .. so I'll be off to buy a smaller grinder ..  B&Q or Home base ??  :(

Chisel as a wedge between carrier and hub?  Reposition around to prevent (subsequent) jamming of ring.

Any emery paper/tape?  Wrap friction side onto carrier then try the stilsons again.  Emery might just aid friction.

You got a welder?
Apply a few spots of weld - will heat up the case, and provide somewhere to grip.

Whenever I've done wheel bearings I've had to heat that part (a lot!) and then get a chisel in behind it gradually.... Once it's moved ¹/₄ inch or so it should be OK.

Not sure a blow torch would get it hot enough but worth a try :-/

Can you even get a slight indentation in the edge with a sharp chisel Nige?  All you are looking for obviously is the start of a bite so that you can apply some rotational twattings with a heavy club hammer/chisel combo to start it off.....

Are you close enough to the kitchen to heat up a steel bar to redhot on the hob, and then apply it to the bearing?

It's just started to move a tad .. about 1/8th " so far .. :(  but I think I've just mullered the ABS sensor thing .. plastic top has flown off in a trilion bits leaving a sorry looking.. and very dirty , flat sensor thing exposed !!  :(

If it's started to move you've done the hardest bit! Get a chisel in the gap and keep going around :y

As for the sensor... :( :( :( Think You'll be needing SWTSMBO's car anyway ::)

But you'll be able to get it all back together and replace the sensor when you get it... May not have ABS though ::) I say may because it might still pick up OK until it gets some water inside it

Sensor may work if its just the casing damaged but, source a second hadn one to fit later (as they never fail).

As already stated by others, the usual trick is a small cut with a grinder and then a cold chisel in the cut.

If it is moving then keep hitting it!

Now I've seen the picture I'd definitely get the grinder out. I wouldn't try a simple slit into it though, you're bound to grind something else that you don't want grinding  ::). Use an ordinary disc ie not slitting disc & grind a nice big flat on it till your flat is almost ready to grind a flat onto the stub axle. You'll know when you're nearly there cos the thinnest bit - in the middle of the flat - will be blue due to the heat and then gradually going through dark & light straw colours towards the edges. Although a small flat on the stub axle won't do any harm, it's best avoided so just before it breaks though hit the inner with your hammer & drift, the heat generated will have helped, & you'll either split it or it'll have expanded enough to be removed.  :y  :y  :y

Combination of all the ideas ... 6" grinder blade (ony metal one I've got) wouldn't get in very well but enough to make a dent or two on the top surface.. also got it nice and hot ... then alternate twatting in both directions with a cold chisel in those dents and it eventually started to rotate a tad.. lots of plus gas and more twatting ..alternating with the claw hammer behind it to ease it forward.

Not a fun job. Who said it came off easily ??

Think you may have to whip the disc off Nige & drive the old one out. When you fit the replacement sensor (tight) make sure the bolthole is lined up

Seems (unless mine was particularly seized) that drifting the old one out isn't going to work  :-[

Not to worry .. wanted ad going up shortly ... and a PM to AndyC for a price .. :) if its cheap enough I'll go for a new one .. :)

Just been to swidnod and back - returning the 400 Nm torque wrench £12 + VAT for 1/2 a day .. not bad IMHO - horrible "drone" has gone, no play in steering :) But we now have TC + ABS lights on ... so I guess I did a good job in mullering the sensor.. :)

Glad you got it all done... Shame about the sensor though. I think they may be the same front/rear :-/ If they are, a 2nd hand rear in better condition may be easier to come by :-?

Looking at EPC fronts are different part numbers to rears

OK .. I broke the ABS sensor by careless use of a percussion instrument..... still might have done the same using your selection of weapons.... :)

Ah! We definitely won't have anything that specific.
A man of your calibre will soon work out how to work an adjustable reamer.  ;) As you slacken & tighten the screwed collar at each end, the blades slide up & down a sloping groove which makes the blades increase or decrease the dia of the reamer. If you're altering it over it's full size range, do it a bit at a time otherwise you can end up with all the blades falling out.  ::) I've had varying degrees of success with adjustable reamers as you can end up with a bore full of chatter marks.  :-/
