Title: Bats being killed by wind farms
Post by Nickbat on 01. Apr 2011 at 21:35
Yet another reason why these monstrosities should be scrapped.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/8419796/Wind-turbines-hit-bat-populations.html

I read the following in the Comments:

First, a common misconception:

"Bats don't fly into any of the multitude of other moving objects so why should they be unable to "see" windmills. The blades turn so slowly and are huge."

Second, a commenter posts details from manufacturers' specs:

"Example 1. A 2MW turbine with an 82m diameter swept area.
Design speed of rotation, 20RPM.
Distance tip travels in one three second rotation = 258m.
Tip speed = 309kph (192MPH)

Example 2. A 3MW turbine with a 109m (optional) swept area.
Design speed of rotation, 18RPM.
Distance tip travels in one 3.3 second rotation = 342m.
Tip speed = 369kph (230MPH)

They are not slow."

So there you have it. Bats & birds take a hit, while we get sod-all electricity, but pay a fortune.  >:(

i think in these times of cutbacks and the implimentation of efficiency measures, if these windmills are really not pulling their weight other uses should be found for them.

Sadly this has been known about for quite awhile. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/wildlife/3298513/Sea-eagles-being-killed-by-wind-turbines.html

And will probably effect Banjax more than us southern softies.  ::)

If it came to a choice between saving the plant and saving flying mice, I know which I would choose.

Not that I agree with global............... :-X

that was the arguement for putting them off the ramsgate coast(no bats, owls)  but then they go and build a wind farm on romney marsh ????

well put it this way, much as i'm moved by your obvious concern for our woodland creatures, I don't think I've ever read you chastising any other industry for harming wildlife leading me to conclude that you merely highlight the plight of the bats because you're still tilting at windmills.

Now, a thread from you displaying an ounce of the same concern over oil covered birds in the gulf for example would allay my suspicions that you refuse to acknowledge anything which doesnt fit with your world view.

But I thought it obvious  ;)

A colleague posted this on Facebook the other day:

http://www.elpais.com/articulo/economia/energia/eolica/coloca/primera/vez/marzo/principal/fuente/generacion/electrica/elpepueco/20110331elpepueco_11/Tes

I realise very few of you here will be able to read it (no, I can't either), but the short version as provided by him:

"In March 2011, 42,2% of Spain's energy has been generated by means of renewable energies. And that is not a peak, same month in last year that figure was 48,5%.

Main source of energy has been the wind with 21% of the total with 4.738 GWh."

Ok, that's the blue touchpaper lit. I'm off! ;D

Yes, but in Spain the electrics are so bad that they don't work most of the time anyway and it's so hot they just sit on a chair drinking a can of San Miguel and watching life go by. ;)

So there we have it... We need to change our habits. Sounds good to me. Not San Miguel, though. How about Timothy Taylor's. Yeah, I could sit drinking that rather than consuming energy. ;D

What utter tosh. When wildlife suffers as a result of an accident, that is one thing - a regrettable, but happily infrequent, occurence. And when birds are affected by oil, there are many actions which are employed, though obviously not with 100% success, to remove the oil and get the birds back into the wild.

Windmills represent an ongoing danger to wildlife, all day every day that the wind blows. Plus they instantly kill or fatally maim birds/bats.

There is, then, a great difference. I appreciate, though, it may be too complex for you to understand fully.  ::) ::)

About Twenty miles from where we live there is a large windfarm. We walk up there and have never seen any dead animals near these windmills though we once found a dead Hispanic goat!

What energy generator doesn't kill animals or humans for that matter? Coal? Nuclear? How many fish and shellfish are dying right now off Japan. I would wager more than all the windmills will kill ever.

If you get walloped by the end of a blade doing nigh on 200mph, you are not going to drop like a stone -- more be catapulted onto the next continent ( OK -- slight exaggeration).
