I have error code 61 , low voltage on purge valve. I have checked out valve and wiring and valve works if I earth earth pin 5 to pin 19 (earth pin) but warning light still stays on presumable beacause it has not switched earth thro. the ecu, Is it possible to change the ecu for a spare of another car without recoding etc. if it is an ecu fault.

I very much doubt the ECU has a fault, I'd be looking at the valve and associated wiring to be honest

But to directly answer your Q, it depends on the age of the car.
