Aside of petrol, has the general cost of living gone up that much within the last couple of years?
Discuss :y |

Depends on which scale you use RPI or real world in my opinion.
As fuel goes up everything goes up it has to get on the shelves somehow :y |

The only scale I tend to use, is how much goes out of our bank account, compared to how much comes in ;D

5 years ago we were nearly paying 1/3 for weekly general shopping (food, cleaning materials, home stuff ,clothing etc) ..now it costs very serious amount that we had to cut from other expenses ( I already cut fuel expenses by buying and paying for a small car and its repairs ;D :P :P )..
looking back now life standards seriously dropped and we become home birds ;D |

Yeah, when they're back up at 12-15%, there's going to be a lot of reposessions going on, I reckon. |

Its risen substantially imo, and as Kevin said, when interest rates inevitably rise there will be a lot of pain to come as people have got used to having cheap mortages for quite a few years now.
Personally, I was an early victim of the credit crunch biting the building industry (and working in a very inneficient company), so I now earn approx. 45% less than I earned 3 years ago, and am actually earning the same as I was earning 20 years ago. Its amazing how you can learn to cutback if you have to, and you inevitably spend a lot of time wondering what exactly you used to do with the money you used to earn. ::) |

Mortgage has gone down but things like food have gone up, I used to spend £50 it now costs £70 for much the same shopping.

yeah i think the cost of living has gone up.
for me the most noticeable thing is the deterioration of ''shopping snobbery'' e.g. even the people who ''would only ever go to sainsburys'' seem to be hunting around for bargains. places like home bargains and the 99p store are the way forward during these expensive times. as for going in to pubs lol pubs can get fcuk'd. £3.60 for a pint of fosters!!!!!! erm ill have the pack of 8 for £5 from the local corner shop and sup in my garden thank you very much!!!!!! (not that i can drink on my diet ::) ::) ::) ::)) |
