...just how reliable/much notice should I take.

Having had the coil pack replaced to fix the P0300/P0305 about 10 days ago I think I'm seeing worse mpg.  Gentle acceleration up from standstill to 20mph starts out at 7mpg and rises to 15-17mpg and I notice a gear change at about 15mph.

Is this something to worry about, or am I just being paranoid  :-[.

The P0300/P0305 hasn't cleared itself yet (since the last time I triggered it with a heavy right foot  ;D).

Perhaps I just need to get back to commuting and seeing how many miles I get out of a tank and see if it has changed.  Maybe the coil pack has been faulty for some time and masking the true low speed mpg  :P.

On tikover on instant it should read 0.2 when at running temp and all electrics off if reads 0.3 its running rich

Err, Mr Hagon has a v6 - idle will be between 0.3-0.4gph, depending on electrical load and A/C.

Only the 4 pots and the TD ever read as low as 0.2gph



Mr Hagon - it is accurate, but may take a few miles for the engine ECU to relearn the engine's (changed) charateristics.

When you say a few miles, how many exactly?  The day after it was sorted I probably put about 100 miles on it over the weekend so are we talking a lot more than that?

Also what's the reason for seeing in effect worse mpg?  Is it because I now have an engine running properly and actually using all cylinders?

In retrospect when the engine is warmer it seems to give better mpg above 30 and gets into 4th at 45mph.  Perhaps it's holding onto each gear a bit longer, or just relearning my driving style  :P.

I drove the car today and the gear changes seemed more like what I was used to, based on my Driving Miss Daisy style  :P.

My 2.6 reads 0.2 gph if it's warm and the A/C is off, out of gear. So there  :P

Watching the instant consumption will send you round the bend eventually  ;D

I have just replaced my DIS pack (again), but before I did I had an intermittent misfire mainly only when the engine was under load i.e accelerating. I was forced to adjust my driving style with much more careful use of the right foot. As a result the fuel economy was no worse than before the misfire. Now I have fixed it I have seen the instantaneous mpg bottom out at 7.1mpg quite regularly. This is purely down to the driving style and is a problem with the driver and not a problem with the car.
By the way I get 0.2g/hr at idle with a V6 when it gets warm and  I agree with jonnycool watching that instantaneous fuel consumption will drive you crazy.

However I just noticed it and thought I would ask the question as to why I was seeing a change in mpg, given the coil pack replacement.

I guess if it bothered me that much I shouldn't be driving a petrol V6  :).

I'm not sure I quite follow here.  I haven't changed my driving style as I only saw a problem when under hard acceleration (5k rpm plus) and all that has changed is the coil pack.  So why do I see the 7.1mpg more often?

Once warmed up and with no load on the electrics or aircon my old 3.0 auto used to tick over at 0.2 gallons per hour, whereas my current 2.5 manual does 0.3.

7 miles per gallon seems normal, if you boot it....
