Title: oil leak
Post by alimodriver on 12. May 2011 at 01:35
I've got a 2.6 v6 24v f/lift 52 plate petrol with an oil leak somewhere up top of the engine. My local garage say pos. rocker gaskets, but not for sure. They have quoted 8 hours labour, and it might not cure it, but I think that's a bit scary. I'm not the best D.I.Yer,.Is it a job I could take on myself, or are there any members in Central Scotland who would help. It's an LPG conversion, by the way

There's a very good chance that it's your rocker/cam cover gaskets that've failed. But 8 hours?????????? :o :o Has your mechanic lost the use of both arms & uses his teeth to do the job?  :o :o :o
pm andyc for a full set of gaskets for around £80 - expensive but you only do the job once instead of twice if you use pattern parts. Your 2.6 makes the job a bit easier as there's less emissions gubbins in the way but when you do the gaskets, make sure you do the breathers at the same time. Have a look through the maintenance section for a how to do.  :y It'll take you half the time quoted by your garage.  ;)

Wow. Didn't expect to get a reply so quickly at this time in the morning, and it sounds like good news for once. I will deffo look into pricing the gaskets and see if I can get a mechanic friend to help.. Thanks for your help

Yep. Clean the breathers to stop the problem reoccurring, and 8 hours is ludicrous. Although, some of the LPG gubbins will be in the way, so it will take longer than on a non LPG car. :y

Depends how the lpg is fitted, if it's got straws through the plenum that won't help.

It's 3 or 4 hours work normally if there's no oil in the plug wells to sort out. Stick some plugs in at the same time if needed.
