Title: Clicking sound
Post by fudgee on 28. Aug 2011 at 14:26
Afternoon all.

My mig has decided to develop a problem today and I'm hoping somebody can point me in the right direction.

When I started the car up earlier I noticed a clicking sound coming from under the bonnnet.
It's clicking in time with the turnover of the engine.

After idling for a minute when first switched on my rev counter always drops slightly and you can hear the turnover slow down.
Well the clicking sound slows down with it and when you press the accelerator it speeds up.

The sound is there when idle and also there when driving.
It increases and decreases with the speed I'm travelling.

Help required plese guys   :-/

First things first... check oil level.

Check auxillary belt is not damaged or has something like a stone embedded in it

Oil level is fine,I did a full oil and filter change a few months ago.

The cambelt was changed september 09 and if i'm reading the mechanics crappy hand writing correctly it had 64000 on it when changed.
It's now done 75000

Other things to consider:
- lazy cam follower
- loose pulley
- exhaust manifold gasket
- EGR valve

Mine does exactly the same been told it,s because i have a stud missing on exhaust manifold disappears after warm up. Will some time in the future be looking to getting it fixed hoping some kind OOF member might be able to help.

Does engine temp affect it?

i'm voting exhaust manifold is cracked...

Take the heat shield off and inspect it  :y

A couple of people have mentioned the exaust manifold so i'm going to remove the heat shield and inspect it as suggested by Tunnie.

Will do it within the next few days and post the results on here. :y :y

If it is that I hope it's not too bloody expensive a fix  :-/

After removal of my heat shield my manifold was cracked across the top had it welded and the clicking continued thats when we found out about the stud missing from the manifold its self. Some say you cant have them welded but this myth is untrue.

Unlikley due to the fact the tick increases and decreases in time with the engine revs
