Title: help car not start
Post by mick-1975 on 29. Aug 2011 at 14:56
hi all ,hope you can help me . i went to work and car ran fine came to it after work and again started and ran great. Then while on the way home i lost all power and the car came to stop in middle of a island (not good )
After looking at it i have found that there is no fuel getting through when i press the pressure release valve. The car will try and turn over but not start .
The relays only make a noise once then nothing unless i take them out and back in again
Fuel pump not buzzing when ignition switches on
Any ideas of what this could be as im back at work later and going devon in 2 weeks .
thanks alot . really need to get this sorted asap.. :y

if fuse fine would check the electrics plug above the tank, faling that motor may have gone.

checked fuse all ok
checked coonector above tank and all is good
i have tried a test light to the pump to see if light comes on and its dead. do u know which one is the live wire as thinking off a direct feed from a battery to see if it works .

If the spanner light is staying on, need to get codes read, possibly an 0335. Any spark at the plugs :question No fuel, no spark = crank sensor

got o obd2 tester from local shop and does not show crank sensor at all .
can the crank sensor cause all this with fuel problems as well

Faulty crank sensor doesn't always throw a fault code.
Your fuel problems could be result of bad crank sensor - as RobG says above "No fuel, no spark = crank sensor" - check spark at plugs mate.

Fuel pump easy enough to change on an estate. Cheap ish too, 'bout £50 iirc. :y

Being an auto, could it be the selector switch? :-/

Fuel pump relay's are quite common failure items on Vx's, I think there the red/purple ones located under the bonnet.

Not seen a fuel pump relay fail on a VX since the mid 90's on the pre Ecotec cars.

If you pop the lid off the main pump relay and press the contacts in with your finger, does the pump run?

Fuel pump is rear right (usualy as you can swap them round)

we have swopped them round and when the ignition switches on we  can hear them energise then nothing if we try again with ignition there is nothing at the relays untill we take them out and in again .
need this sorting as work again tonight . doing my head in

As said, pop the lid off the right hand side one and press the contacts together whilst the ignition is on.

Get somebody to check the fuel pump runs whilst doing this and also check for the fuel at the rail.

Lift the boot carpet and remove the metal inspection plate in the boot.

Check the fuel pump wiring connections and if you can, check for the presence of volts on the terminals.

Post by mick-1975 on 30. Aug 2011 at 16:42
checked the wireing all is ok .
any ideas how to check the volts as no volt meter
we put ignition on and used a test light and got nothing at all .

Use a test light and get somebody to press the relay under the bonnet.

ill try that one .

just phoned up main deeler and ask how much crank sensor and told them about it there saying that the crank sensor would not stop the fuel getting through.

just an idear but can you get under the rear of the tank and above were the fuel filter is there is a wire or 2 and a plug see if it is still in??

checked round the filter all seems to be ok cant see anything out of place

Title: Re: help car not start
Post by RobG on 31. Aug 2011 at 12:26
Either put a jumper from ECU pin 3 to pin 2 or remove the fuel pump relay and bridge the two contacts with a short wire link with two spade connectors attached and get someone to crank engine while you listen for the pump. Failing that, apply 12v direct to the pump

ive ordered a crank sensor as people are telling me that it could be the problem .as someone a friend knows had the same problem and he changed the sensor so just got to wait for it to arrive in stock . i shall do as you say and try that .

if not think it be towed to main deeler im affraid or scrap . as really doing me head in

Title: Re: help car not start
Post by RobG on 31. Aug 2011 at 12:44
Forget the crank sensor, you haven`t got a code for it and on the 2.2 a failed C/S will always throw a 0335. Put 12v direct to the pump. If it doesn`t run the pump is knackered. I`ve got a working one here if it`s donald
