Title: 2001 2.2 Gearbox Oil Filter Opinions Needed Please Post by car-nut on 02. Sep 2011 at 22:26
I am planning on servicing my gearbox at the beginning of next month, and as per limited on budget, I am definitely buying genuine Vauxhall sump gaskets and buying oil elsewhere, but am not sure what to do about the oil filter, if it was cleaned up would it last a long time again? Or is it better just to spend the money on buying a new one?
If I can get away with cleaning the filter up, what is the best way to clean the filter up? Cheers Nearly forgot to say, my car is the AUTOMATIC model on a 2001 facelift model. |

IMHO there is no point in going to all the effort of servicing the gearbox and then not changing the filter. As RobG says, get the filter from the same place as the gaskets. Job done. :y

it never ceases to amaze me why people waste their money changing filters in the omega tranny when a simple sluice thro! with petrol, parafin or even white spirit will do.(if the filter is blocked then your tranny is already toast!!)gaskets is another , grab a tube of instant gasket and put the sumps back on, it will be fine :y

Thank you RobG, All makes sense again thanks to you ;D
But I cannot see on there sight how to order online, what I have done though, is used the list of part numbers you sent me and as you said check with them to make 100% sure they are correct for my car so emailed them my reg number and info as I am having a very busy day today. I have also asked for prices inc VAT and postage. I have to say although I annoy a lot of people on here, this is the friendliest owners club I have ever been a member of. :) |

The sumps I want to put new gaskets on no matter what as I am not keen on using sealant on everything, but with the filter, it all depends on what state it is in. If it is perished I will change it or if the price isn't too bad from jpat I will replace it. |

My jaw just hit the floor!!! :o :) For a good reason.
I emailed JPAT for the quote for the parts who have given me a 50% discount making the order including NEXT DAY by NOON delivery all in at £34.39!!! Without the oil. Thank you for telling me to go to them :y Prices as of today after the 50% discount are: Front Sump Gasket £4.02 Rear Sump Gasket £3.39 GM Filter £10.50 Next Day by noon delivery £10.75 All from JPAT. I will be placing the order on the 23rd September. I have also just bought the switch cleaner from Maplin Ready £3.99 And just need to get the oil which is going to cost me Dexron 3 Carlube oil from Eurocarparts £22.79 before the 25% discount. So all in all a lot cheaper than I thought it would be thank goodness. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) |

My pennies worth, wouldn't bother with getting next day postage for £10.75, I asked them for a cheaper option, cost me £3.50 and I still got it next day!
Also, as others may say, I filled mine with Fuchs Titan 4000 ATF. Used 6 litres annoyingly, but bought it from Opie Oils for £51.84 delivered. Can't personally add anything to what you might find on here about Fuchs, but since doing the change the car changes smoother, and feels generally better. Do not know what was in there before though! Final thoughts on the filter. I changed mine. The original looked fine, but did it anyway as it was only £10. If this is the first time you are doing it, I would change it. But when I do the auto fluid change again in 40k miles, I will not. HTH ;) |

Save your money on the filter. When you see it you'll realise it's not a fine particulate filter like an air filter or engine oil filter. It's of a similar consistency to those green scourer pads you get on the back of a sponge for doing the dishes. It has little resistance to flow and does not catch iron fileings or similar size particles.
Just wash the old one out as sasssanach says. He knows his stuff and is respected on here for his auto box experience. I never changed mine on the last two I have done. There was nothing in it but ATF. The magnet in the sump catches far more sediment. Save your money. |
