Title: Variable intermittent wiper - an easier way?
Post by Kevin Wood on 07. Aug 2010 at 13:19
OK. I did it the obvious way on my Omega and it works nicely.

Here's the guide to recap:

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1279100997

One of the things I want to add to the Westfield is an intermittent wipe - it doesn't have one at all, let alone variable!

Anyway, I've been rersearching ways to do this and came across a VW part which implements variable intermittent wipe in quite a neat way.

This wiper delay timer "learns" the wiper interval in the following way:

It starts drizzling, so you flick the wipers once. It keeps drizzling so, when the screen is in need of another wipe, you flick it onto intermittent. The wiper delay timer sets itself to the time interval between your initial "flick" of the wipers and when you switched it to intermittent, and carries on using that interval thereafter.

So.. No need for a stalk with a variable setting and, the best part, this relay is pin compatible with the non-variable timer module already fitted in Omegas without variable intermittent!

The upgrade simply involves lifting the bonnet, pulling out the old timer module and plugging in the new one.

I should stress that I haven't tried this in an Omega as I've already changed the stalk on mine however I have obtained a timer module, tested it on the bench and I can't see any reason why this wouldn't work on an Omega. It behaves exactly as my old non-variable timer module except that you can set the time interval. 8-)

If anyone wants to try this, you will need the timer module which is VW part number 357 955 531. Also referred to on the net as the "99" relay as it often has a large number 99 printed on the case. This site suggests that there are some equivalent parts but I can't vouch for its' accuracy.http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Wiper_Variable_intermittent

I ordered one from ebay seller stevens_vw_dismantlers mid-afternoon yesterday and it was on the mat waiting this morning when i got up (OK, I had a lie-in). :y

I stress that I haven't tried this on an Omega but if someone would like to volunteer to try it out I will agree to buy back their relay if it doesn't work, such is my confidence that it will. Once it has been verified I will add the info to the guide.

Yes, googling for info reveals it seems to be popular on quite a few models of car. Quite surprising it hasn't reached the Omega community before.

Presumabaly cos there's a variable intermittant wiper switch already available for an Omega.  ;)  ;)

Though this a while back.
Newer VXs of lesser ilk have the variable timer method intemittant wipe relay.
My question at the time was - are these pin-for pin compatible with the Omegas ??   I was going to get one to try but, alas didn't get a "round tuit" in time - so didn't ever find out.  But now you've rekindled my interest ...

I like the sound of that.

wonder if it will work on the estate  :-/

I don't see why not, Jimbob. Only difference on the estate is there's some more gubbins on the stalk for the rear wiper. Front wiper circuit looks identical. :y

Yep, will do. Hopefully fitted to a Westfield.

Hi All,
Yup, this is an easy way to fit variable delay wipers if not OEM on your version of the Omega.

Mine is the ex plod 02 3.2 Estate only fitted with fixed delay wipers.

I sent for the relay from same place as Kevin £12.49 (VW dealer in Southampton wanted £38.00) Looked up on maintenance guide on here for location of relay, on mine relay K8, position 9 (tall yellow relay) in relay box.

Swapped relays, and hey presto now have programmable wiper delay.

Well done Kevin.

Regards
Roger

Think I will have a go at this for my ex-plod :y

Doesn't yours have a rain sensor?

.. and as for the money back guarantee, the solution has been proven by Big_Roger so any problems will be considered down to user error and not covered. :P

No rain sensors on this one, and fixed intermittent which is why I'm trying your idea ...  :)

And as to the withdrawal of the guarantee on such slim grounds ... well I'm lost for words .....

OK I've sent for one, same place should be here in the morning. Thing is can't get the old relay out, does it just pull out or am I missing something  :-?

It does just pull out but sometimes they can be stiff. Might help to remove the whole socket and ease it out with a flat bladed screwdriver.

Got the flick then intermittant which sets the delay interval thing.  How do you reset it to another timing?  Switch off and restart/repeat as required??   :-/

Yes, I think so.

I have added the above details to the maintenance guide.

Right . ... relay arrived and installed .. just got to learn how to use it now !!!

So ... "flick wipe" by single pull up on stalk as if about to wash screen. Then select intermittant and the relay will "learn" that time interval ??

or am I a numpty ??   :)

That is my understanding, but not done it yet, and the time between the flick, and selecting intermittant becomes the time interval until next time.

Think its more of the vertical, normal axis of movement, quick single wipe type activation rather than back towards you wash/wipe.  Then click onto intermittant and the relay does the time repeat interval between the two activations until switched off/further on.  ;)

Ahh I get you ... so towards intermittent but not quite for the "flick wipe" then into intermittent to set the time gap .. :)

Will try tomorrow as it looks certain to be raining !!!  :(
