Travelling down the M62 yesterday a reasonable speed Wink

and the MID flashed a warning check oil level. I knew the oil level was OK because I checked it before I set out but I still pooed myself because I was trying to work out where all that oil had gone in a 340 mile round trip. After driving the last 40 miles like a Sunday driver I arrived home and let the engine cool for a couple of hours before checking the oil level which was O.K. Can anyone tell me if the gearbox oil is linked to the display or is it likely to be a faulty sensor?

V6 Cambelts, tensioners and water pump replaced £235 including parts or supply your own £100 fitted

Jul 2006 at 08:28 It will be sensor related (autobox level not measured). Sensor is bolted to sump, might just be shitty connectors that need cleaning (tends to get a bit dirty down there).

I had this for a while. Typically at 70-80mph uphill on the M40. In fact, this was the only place it ever happened. Actual oil level was normal. It stopped occurring after I changed the cam seals and cleared the breather pipes.

My theory, for what it's worth, is as follows:

The oil return channels on the V6 are marginally too small by design
If the breathers are blocked, oil return to the sump is further retarded
The oil level sensor is in the front half of the sump (????)
If you run the oil pump flat out (eg high speed, uphill) you will starve the sump momentarily
Hence the false alarm

The problem with false alarms, of course, is that one day they are real. So don't entirely ignore it.
