EM LIGHT
30. Jul 2006 at 19:27

Hi all. My engine management light has been coming on and off for the last few days(dont want to hear about your indicators, Fin). I went to Liverpool today and came back with all four wheels but the EM is permanently on now.

The car seems to drive perfectly normal. I think I read on another thread that when the EM light comes on the car goes into 'limp' mode. This doesn't seem to be the case. Acceleration is smooth and even right up the range(85-95mph all the way home today)
Am I right in thinking this is more likely to be a duff sensor rather than an engine problem?

Any thoughts would be appreciated as it's that time of year and we're off round the lake district in it next week. Dont want to give it to Vx cause they'll f**k me about and charge me the earth.

Cheers,Steve.

Being a 2.5, you may be able to do paperclip test - post results here Smiley

I've tried the paperclip test before and it doesn't seem to work.

But, as I said, would the fault code displayed be a true fault or could the sensor be sending a bad reading?

Most likely a sensor, but you have to find which one, and you need fault codes for this.  A 2000 car may not be OBDII/EOBD compliant...

I'll try to explain myself better.

Say the ABS sensor was duff and that was the code displayed. The ABS system would still be fine, just the sensor saying it wasn't...so the car would be OK to drive?

Nope, the em system has detected a problem (most likely with a sensor) and is GUESSING the signal. It needs resolving...

Best case scenerio, it lets you down big time, worse case, it causes other probs - eg runs rich and damages cats...

Incidentally, if the ABS telltale is one, the ABS system is disabled. Likewise with SRS...

Most independents should have some equipment for reading the codes...

Might be worth posting if anyone near you has got the cheapo tech2 as this should be able to read your codes and reset them

Cheers

I think my exhaust might be holed, sounds a bit like it. I'll get it checked out ( if I ever get time, I am soooo busy). Might be the lambda sensor.....I hope so.
