Coolant pipe removal from stat
03. Aug 2006 at 21:19

Any suggestions for getting my coolant pipe out of the stat housing? X30XE.

Mine's is solid. Wiggling about slightly, but doesn't want to come out. Retaining bolt has been removed.

Get a pry bar and place it between the coolant pipe bracket and head (as close to the pipe as possible). Then apply some pressure whilst wiggling it, it should let go.....works every time for me.

Yup, tried that and a bit of the bracket has broken off.  Cry

Bit dubious about prying any further in case the whole bracket goes, then i'll need a whole new pipe.

I'm starting to think junior hacksaw to the old thermostat housing just at the point where it thickens up and the coolant pipe goes in. I reckon that with a little patience i'd get through ok.

I'd be able to get the pipe out and remove the remainder of the stat housing without any further damage to the bracket, wouldn't i?

It's the complete unit, stat and housing i'm replacing anyway. Er, trying to replace.

What say you?

Surprised it broke, they normaly give up and seperate, sometimes takes 5 mins of wiggling whilst applying pressure.

You could try hacksawing it.....

Does that sound a bit dodgy?

I initially thought it would be cos of the filings, but the stat should be shut so none should go into the block.

Should i just try wiggling again in the morning? (the light has beat me)

You need to try to get a circular motion on it.....its worth drowning it in penetraing fluid or at least some wd 40...

Job done!  Smiley

All the wigglin' in the world wasn't gonna move that pipe! Shortly after i bust my lip and tongue clean open with the pry bar i opted for the alternate method of removal, which was, thankfully a success. A few butterflies sorted the lip out.

Took plenty of pictures of the journey, minus the lip, i'll spare my blushes. Was thinking of doing a How2 if anyone is interested?

I don't see a How2 for the stat replacement, and it isn't exactly straight forward. Well, mine wasn't anyway.

Thanks anyway for your help.   Smiley
