Secondry air pump !
04. Aug 2006 at 21:26

Hi peeps,

Despite replacing the complete exhaust and CAT with genuine VX parts and replacing the manifold to block and manifold to CAT gaskets, the 2.2 is still a bit exhausty on start up !

No leaks in pipr work, have checked this several times !

I know the supposed location of the secondry air pump, but have failed to find it !
Give me a clue as to what exactly i am trying to find here ! How big is it, whats it look like etc

Photos would be brilliant if anyone with a 2.2 could take a snap for me !

For the more technical amoungst you, i know what the role of the secondry air pump is, and how it supposidly worlk etc, BUT how exactly does it pump air into the eshaust system, wheres the pipe work !
Were does it enter the exhaust system, is it through the block / head at some point, as its not directly in to the exhaust system, and not in to the manifold !

Cheers

Mark

As a general rule, the engine management systems with dual lambda control dont have air injection and as such I doubt its fitted to the 2.2.

As far as I know the 2.2 is the new generation of engines just like 2.6/3.2, and it might not actually have a secondary air pump... This has been done away with on the newer engines as part of a complete revamp of the emission control system, i.e. lower compression and no EGR. But someone may confirm regarding the 2.2....

i don't think air injection is fitted to any of the drive-by-wire Omegas...

EGR is generaly still fitted, its just the 2.6 and 3.2 were not sold into the states so the NOx emisions were not important.

It's nice to know that since I changed from the 2.5 to the 2.6 I am no longer feeding my engine (well one half of it anyway) with burnt fuel... Smiley

Hehhehehhe hahahhaha NO WONDER i cant find the b****y thing ! I,ve been looking for weeks ! Dohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!! Shocked

Oh well, thats that then, no more on me back looking for a glorified hairdrier ! Suits me !

So, apart from the exhaust, CAT, gaskets , what other reasons could i be experiancing an exhausty noise on start up !

I know people have mentioned the 2.2 is a noisy engine !

Cheers

mines noisey when cold, but then again the exhaust is shot.

Compared to my dads which is also a 2.2 but auto, mine is a lot louder.... but i am putting that down to the shot exhuast.

Once warmed up though sounds fine....

Its just the V6's make a much more appealing sound when cold compared to 4 pots  Sad

Do you break V6's as often as TheBoy? Then you need tunnie's towing services, recovery costs are just the humiliation of being towed by 2/3's of an engine

Well, it actualy feeds both halves as there are two ports in the bottom of the plenum....
.....plus its a good thing, if you can 'go large' on the EGR then it can help economy as its a simple way of dynamicaly reducing the engine cc.

Didn't know they moved it to the plenum - I thought they did away with it altogether. Thanks for the info!

I agree with AA......when i first bought the omega....i took it too vx dealer for cambelt/etc change.....they noticed it 'ticked' a bit when cold.....which i hadnt really noticed.....turned out to be exhaust mani cracked.....so if they could hear a bit of a tick (tho obviously bit louder if they had the bonnet open) then the engine carnt be that noisy when cold.

Only thing i can think off.....do you have the sound proofing fitted underneath the bonnet?
Maybe VX dont fit that on the GLS.....cost cutting!?
