The school i worked at was one of the largest in the country 2,300 + kids - Being a techy i still had the pleasure of teaching the little darlings how to build a PC.

It was the most I.T spec'ed school i have ever seen:

710 PC's
200 Admin PC's (support staff only)
110 Laptops for teachers (200 teaching staff in total)
Aprrox 25 Smart Screen's
Over 30 Digital projects mounted on the cellings with a PC in the class room.

The problem is teachers would base there entire lessons around them, so if a projector failed because of a blown bulb. They would be onto us like a flash saying 'i can't teach i have no project fix it NOW!!'

We would then explain the blubs for a digital projects cost from £180 - £300 depending on the type. Being a large I.T dept on school fiances we don't have loads of spare bulbs!!

Impact maintenance!! Can't beat it!! (pardon the pun!)

If something doesn't fit it can usually be persuaded with something large, heavy and blunt!! (Oh! that describes me fairly accurately!! Shocked

)

Anyway, WRT IT at school, the best we had was BBC Model 'B's with portable telly's. If you were really lucky, you got a colour one!! Wasn't much better at college either! Learned a bit of machine code on them though!! Cool

I 'fixed' a DLT drive that was really pissing me off with a sledgehammer a couple of months back. As the bits shattered and fly into the neighbours garden, everyone shut their windows. I wonder why?

I enjoyed it so much, I went for the video card in one of the servers (the one that runs this place), and tried educating that with the same sledgehammer but failed to shatter that Sad

I don't think Mrs TheBoy was too impressed that I'd smashed up £2000 worth of tape drive, but deep down she understood it needed to happen, and that it would never piss me off again....

Aug 2006 at 10:43 hehe, we did the very same with some mobo's in the holidays, we managed to snap a mobo, and we had a baseball bat, and wacked the mobo and bits of componets when everyware. Great fun!

Many years ago i used to work for a comp that built 'supercomputers'.
They used to have scsi disks....then not very big and blooming expensive.
There used to be rows and rows of em in rack mount trays.
The trays were built inhouse like all the mechanical bits.

This one computer when turned on for the 1st time.....none of its disks span up.

After a bit of head scratching.....we found the fault.....every single tray had the 5v and 12v incorrectly wired for the disks....

Ooopppssss only about £30k of disk drives fooked Grin
