Engine transplant... Now I'm stuck..
17. Aug 2006 at 08:15

I had to resort to getting the ECU and transponder from a Z12XE engined corsa as the key + transponder for the engine I purchased never materialised.

The ECU for the Z12XE is a Bosch M1.5.5 (same as the Z20LET) but obviously the map is wrong.. I've managed to power the ECU up and wire it up to a spare OBD port for diagnostics.

So heres the question: Do I need to write a complete map from an Astra GSi ECU or can I just change the engine code on the ECU and it will use a map it already has internally? Vauxhall seem to think they just "code it to the car" which involves no software updates?

If anyone knows anything no matter how trivial please dont be affraid to tell me as I'm getting totally stuck now Sad

Cheers!

I would of thought it was a downloadable map, which is probably what is realy happening when they code the ECU (not to bright these vaux mechanic guys).

I assume the ECU is the same Vaux part number......

Yep same Vaux and Bosch partnumber, so I'm only assuming that the difference is the fuel map.

I've been looking at these KWP2000 devices that say they can flash the ECU but I'm very skeptical, plus no one seems to have a copy of the Astra GSi map Sad

Our chip supplier can download a map to it.

it would be an uprated map, ie a stage 1 type..

We had a customer with a Zafira GSi Turbo and that had a new map downloaded to it.

Thanks for the kind offer but Hull is a bit to far for me to go with a Z20LET running on a Z12XE map Sad  I'd probably have no pistons left.

I dont suppose you could be kind enough to provide me with the binary file for the map?

I needs to be powered up, attached to the transponder reciever with the key, or its locked out. Its a solid state ECU, nothing like the old Eprom/PIC based ECU's.

That'll be what I mean  Smiley Its the same as the ECU that was introduced on the 2.2 omega, well not actually the same as the omega one has a totally different pinout and its a Siemens unit.

More interesting problems.. The newer vauxhalls have a local bus system, each 'area' of the car has its own control unit which communicates with the ECU and other components. For example the Body control unit communicates with the ECU, it can then disclose engine and road speed, engine temperatures etc to the instrument control unit that displays it on the various gauges/lights. Obviously I will not have the body control unit so I need to supply the engine temperature and speed to the gauges some how, engine speed shouldnt be so bad I can feed one of the cylinder firing references to the rev counter that should be correct... bah who knows...

bloody modern cars!

Yes, thats the CAN bus stuff.  And various devices are the interfaces between some of the different buses - for example, the MID is interface between the slow and medium speed buses on Vectra C.

I believe Geff had a loom made up when he works at v6 plant, and it cost several thousand £

Was the donor car a CAN bus car (ie was it Astra-G or Astra-H)

Donor cars are 2004 Zafira and a 2003 Corsa. The corsa ecu has far less interface with the other devices compared to the zafira that has all sorts of extra gubbins, I can get the ECU to come on line but it complains about not seeing the body control unit, hopefully this wont raise the MIL light and a limp home state.

AFAIK all of the Astra/Zafira turbos are based on the can bus system, there are 2 Other Omega turbos in the country both using the M1.5.5 and Z20LET ECU so its got to be possible Smiley And I obviously cant use the Body control unit from the corsa/zafira as it also relys on the corsa/zafira instrument cluster.

I'm going to bite the bullet and attempt to start the engine on the stand, I need to source a fuel pump and hoses first though.
