Is it a strip of L.E.D's? If it is, perhaps they've all blown. Before you do anything more complicated, have you tried the unit direct from the battery, just to see that it works.

It should be possible to replace the leds and any drive transistors....and perhaps add a bit of protection for the leds in future

Personally, I'd get a price from Vx, also a part number, and then decide if you can save enough to be worth the trouble.
